Just went back after spending a week at this great and special resort.Overall we had a fantastic time. This was primary because we stayed in a great and clean beachfront villa and the beach (white sandy beach) is really magic, a bit like Thailand used to be 20 years ago. We stayed at the villas to the right side of the resort (search google for a map showing the layout of the place), starting at no 1170, there are 9 of these. On the other side there are 5 beachfront villas. I think we had the best choice. It was very quiet and the sound of the waves was great. This is a place where you spend lazy days at the beautiful beach and the pool. Not much happens. Walking the beach during the afternoon is lovely. The beachpool is a bit crowded during high season (the other one almost empty), and of course, full of children. Kantary is a family- place. Gym is great and Breakfastbuffet is great but we never tried the restaurant at night. I prefer the typical thai-beachrestaurant where you sit with your feet in the sand. There are 2 of these 100 m on the right side of the beach and 2 more a bit further on to the left hand (the friendly bar and the boatyard rest)
If you go to Kantary- stay in the beachfrontvillas or in a suite (complex A is nearest beach) with a seaview. (these are probably some of the best bungalows along the coastline, and I´ve seen many in Phuket and elsewhere in Thailand). But I wouldn't stay elsewhere at Kantary. There are to many villas in the middle, a bit claustrophobic I think, and unfortunately they are building a new 4 storey-building now making it look like a huge camp.
Someone said Kantary almost looks like a thai-prison and unfortunately I have to agree to this. It has a strange layout, a bit stiff, and the lobby is beautiful but totally deserted during the evening so there is no cosy resort/hotel feeling in the lobby. Its all very new and in a couple of years I think it will be a bit more green and cosy. The resort is isolated but it was ok taking a shuttle-bus from hotel to Khao Lak and do some shopping (even though Khao Lak town is a boring place)
Antoher downside with Kantary is part of the staff. At the reception they are not very Thai, not many sawadeekaahs :) and things Im used to from my many trips in the country. They are friendly but sadly seem to be lacking the typical smiling thai-mood which I love so much.
Tip: Take a taxi to the Meridien nearby a night, have a drink in the lobby looking over the beautiful garden and then walk 200 m to the left on the beach, and you´ll find a great local restaurant in the corner. (called Rim-ley?)
