Had a great time, staff are more than helpful.... Rooms very clean, beds abit hard, but for the price we paid.... We could have asked for anymore.... It even exceeded our expectations.... Breakfast choice is interesting... But toast and cereal are on offer.... Lunch by the pool was excellent, and the evening meals very good.... Great choice and very reasonable.... The pool kept very clean, the only let down is the beach.... Could do with a tidy up.... But this is not all down to the hotel!

Staying at sea shells was not the best start to a holiday in Sri Lanka. On arrival, they didnt have my reservation. (i had made it online and fortunently had printed off the reservation number) Luckily they had a room available. We checked into our room and had a quick chat to the security guard before locking up and heading to dinner at the hotels restaurant. On return to our room, my mobile phone was missing. Management was informed and they were helpful in searching for the missing item which was not found. On checkout 2 of our credit cards didnt work and the manager asked us to wait for him to have his tea break before heading to the police to file a report on missing phone for insurance purposes. In the end he didnt even come with us, instead sending his assistant manager, who was very helpful.

Seashells has now shut (1 May 2010) until Dec 2010. It'll re-open as a 4-&-a-half Star, which is a shame as the relaxed atmosphere of the hotel will presumably be gone, to the greatest extent. We got on well with staff and with many of the beach vendors, who will have a tough life for the next 8 months (during refurb), and probably have difficulties when it re-opens, as new, stricter rules will probably apply to them.

We found the people of Sri Lanka to be friendly, happy, welcoming people. Some people are jaded and distorted through the tourism industry, but the majority are sincere.

We went on several tours through drivers from the hotel, including Sarath, Rohan, Sham the Boatman, and Benat the Tuk-Tuk driver, who all give excellent value for money. I also recommend highly: Mohammed the Leather guy, and his friend Subi, who are both beach vendors. Mohammed made us a wonderful red nappa leather bag within one day, to spec, and it is gorgeous.

The hotel staff were (almost) always happy to do us extra favours, for instance the laundry lady (Damika) sewed on a button and repaired a rip in my dress, very expertly, within a short time, and didn't charge anything for it at all. (I say "almost" because we did have a few items pinched from our room while we were away on a 2-day tour, which was quite upsetting. Like someone was undoing the favours that others had done.)

Many of the waiters and the (only!) waitress became our personal friends. We exchanged email addresses with many.

We had an eleven-day extension to our holiday because of the volcanic ash, and we were able to enjoy that time a lot, getting to know the language and the local amenities more, feeling by the end that we could almost live there independently of the hotel.

This hotel has a great positon right on the beach and is the last hotel from the town so has quiet surroundings. The lounge has wonderful views across the bay and you can relax and watch the prawn boats fishing. The dining room on the first floor overlooked the beach and the food here was excellent especialy the Sri Lanka options. We were full board and all meals were very well presented and tastey.Staff were very friendly and always on hand. The pool and surrounding area were always very clean and tidy.Special mention to our waiter Asanka.
The beach and sea were very clean and the hawkers were no problem, just say no.
We hire a car and driver for the day who was attached to the hotel a great guy called Chaminda who took us to ride and wash the elephants, an unforgetable experience,Kandy and other interesting places on the journey.
We met Sarath on the beach who organised a trip by his boat crocodile hunting in the lagoon. We saw bats, met fishermen in the lagoon, held puffa fish and met a giant lizard a great morning out.
Hired a tut tut driver Dammika twice he was great value took us to his house and Negombo waited while we shopped. He also took us to the Buddist temple and a night visit round the town and got us some great clothes bargins .The Hotel is being refurbished starting April so we wish all the staff good luck for the future.
