The hotel is located north of town just south of a fishing village.
The is kept extreamly clean. The staff are always sweeping or cleaning. Even though the lobby lounge opens right on to the beach you never saw sand in it because the staff would sweep it up before you saw it.
The restaurant was good. I was on the half board plan. Breafast was bufffet and dinner a set menu. Except on night when they set up a buffet on the beach which was really nice.
I was told that when the hotel is full they serve dinner as a buffet other wise it is served as a set menu. There were usually four choices on the set menu three "western" meals one Sri Lankan. The only thing I found negative about dinning at the hotel was that lunch which was not included, seemed more expevise by Sri Lankan standards. But there are plenty of placed near by.
The rooms are basic but clean PLEASE NOTE: THE ROOMS DO NOT HAVE TV.
The only TV is in the bar.
This made for rather quiet evenings. I would eat late then have a few beers in the bar then call it an evening.
The staff are wonderful. They were all very freindly and will to help you.
If the rooms had TV this would be by hotel of choice in Negombo

Had a great time, staff are more than helpful.... Rooms very clean, beds abit hard, but for the price we paid.... We could have asked for anymore.... It even exceeded our expectations.... Breakfast choice is interesting... But toast and cereal are on offer.... Lunch by the pool was excellent, and the evening meals very good.... Great choice and very reasonable.... The pool kept very clean, the only let down is the beach.... Could do with a tidy up.... But this is not all down to the hotel!

Staying at sea shells was not the best start to a holiday in Sri Lanka. On arrival, they didnt have my reservation. (i had made it online and fortunently had printed off the reservation number) Luckily they had a room available. We checked into our room and had a quick chat to the security guard before locking up and heading to dinner at the hotels restaurant. On return to our room, my mobile phone was missing. Management was informed and they were helpful in searching for the missing item which was not found. On checkout 2 of our credit cards didnt work and the manager asked us to wait for him to have his tea break before heading to the police to file a report on missing phone for insurance purposes. In the end he didnt even come with us, instead sending his assistant manager, who was very helpful.

Seashells has now shut (1 May 2010) until Dec 2010. It'll re-open as a 4-&-a-half Star, which is a shame as the relaxed atmosphere of the hotel will presumably be gone, to the greatest extent. We got on well with staff and with many of the beach vendors, who will have a tough life for the next 8 months (during refurb), and probably have difficulties when it re-opens, as new, stricter rules will probably apply to them.

We found the people of Sri Lanka to be friendly, happy, welcoming people. Some people are jaded and distorted through the tourism industry, but the majority are sincere.

We went on several tours through drivers from the hotel, including Sarath, Rohan, Sham the Boatman, and Benat the Tuk-Tuk driver, who all give excellent value for money. I also recommend highly: Mohammed the Leather guy, and his friend Subi, who are both beach vendors. Mohammed made us a wonderful red nappa leather bag within one day, to spec, and it is gorgeous.

The hotel staff were (almost) always happy to do us extra favours, for instance the laundry lady (Damika) sewed on a button and repaired a rip in my dress, very expertly, within a short time, and didn't charge anything for it at all. (I say "almost" because we did have a few items pinched from our room while we were away on a 2-day tour, which was quite upsetting. Like someone was undoing the favours that others had done.)

Many of the waiters and the (only!) waitress became our personal friends. We exchanged email addresses with many.

We had an eleven-day extension to our holiday because of the volcanic ash, and we were able to enjoy that time a lot, getting to know the language and the local amenities more, feeling by the end that we could almost live there independently of the hotel.

Stayed here for three weeks after an extended stay due to the fligh situation.

Looked after by the hotel staff who were very accommodaing in the situation.

Had a very relaxing stay with plenty of nice restaurants if you were not earting in the hotel.
