We loved this hotel - it is simply beautiful. The interior design is first-class - high ceilings, beautiful polished floors, attention to detail and quality fittings everywhere. It was very special to be here. The staff were also great, very attentive and helpful. We also appreciated the guest kitchen, where we could make ourselves an early morning pot of tea! The lounge and poolside areas were delightful and comfortable places to rest, work, read, eat, enjoy. Thank you all!

We spent one night here during our honeymoon. The hotel was situated in the middle of the city so it was convenient to walk around. The hotel was luxurious with very beautiful rooms and decorations. We used the laundry service and our clothes were ready in a few hours. Tea, coffee and soft drinks were available to us. My husband went for a late afternoon swim in the courtyard and I sat reading a book under a tree with falling flowers. We left very early for a whale boat trip and got a packed breakfast consisting of bread, fruits and a bottle of water. It was quite an enjoyable stay.

So glad to be in the fort itself to stay after the squalor seen in the town on the way in. Hotel was amazing...welcomed warmly and shown to our room which was more like a suite. Huge bathroom/dressing room - bedroom with living room one end and huge bed the other. (use the mosquito net or you will get bitten) Food excellent, service amazing, staff friendly. Bar and pool. Excellently placed for a stroll around town taking in the little shops. Nearly directly opposite is an Italian ice cream shop - belissimo! We were in a room overlooking the outside restaurant area which was noisy at night...music also very loud until about 10pm. Not a problem for us but something to consider if you go to bed early and rise early.

By far the best meal in Galle during a 3 night stay. Don't be put off by the limited choices on the menu; they do every dish on there incredibly well. The sambal fish curry and lamb tagine were fantastic (the lamb tagine was one of the best meals I've ever had), and the mutton samosas are a great starter. The sambal curry comes with a great selection of 4 side dishes too.
Our waiter Sanjeev was great and explained about the origin of the dishes etc. The bill for 2 of us (2 courses with beers and coffees) came to just under £50 including tip, so not the cheapest in Galle but by far the best. Not even the hateful middle aged couple sat behind us subjecting each other to an evening of psychological torture and manipulation could sully the hard work of Sanjeev and co. If you happen to be in Galle, don't be a mug, get down "the printers" for a nosh.

Efficiency and charm from check in to check out. The old hotel has a small number of named rooms, ours the Headmasters. Large, very comfortable and convenient for both relaxing and the more normal sleeping and bathing. Lovely antique furniture. Breakfast served near the swimming pool, from a menu was freshly and well prepared and most enjoyable including beautifully prepared fruit platter, fruit juice and pastries etc. Not a buffet in sight - thank goodness. Staff very efficient and helpful.
The hotel is centrally located in the Fort area and thus provides easy access to all the sites including the bastions, churches, sea museum and market as well as a range of local restaurants.
If you are looking to buy spices in Sri Lanka take a tuktuk, for a nominal sum, to the outskirts of Galle to an excellent spice seller adjacent to the market.(Closed Sundays).
