“Surprisingly Interesting”
Review of Benteng Somba Opu

Reviewed 16 December 2016

Sadly this place is not very well managed, but it's interesting nevertheless. The wall itself is already run down and you have to walk about 10-12 minutes from the entrance to reach it. At first I was confused where the wall/fort is because there's no clear map or signs to give you directions. There's nothing to do here apart of sightseeing, which you can finish in within 15-30 minutes. There's a lot of different traditional ethnic houses from different parts of Sulawesi but what I find weird is that there's people going in and out of the area using scooters, so the whole location seems so urban already. From the city center it took 15-20 minutes to get here by car. Not really a must visit but if you can't go to Toraja yet curious of what the infamous Toraja houses look like, you can go here to see the replica.

This wonderful site is in need of some freshening up. There is still much to see and it's a good place for a quiet evening stroll.

Although I have rated this as average if you are a history buff it is more on the good side. The history here of the early traders, this early port, the thick walls that kept them separate from the Makassan people and much more. We had a guide with a very good grip on the early trade history of Makassar, reasonable English language skills and he was able to answer our many questions. It is sad that the actual cultural village that is situated close by has not been maintained and I cannot recommend a visit of that but you will drive through to get to the old port and walls.

Somba Opu Fort was the old center of Makassar, therefore the Young people of us can,t forgot to visit and could be a history study at school or be an interesting history discussion of The Great of Makassar in Last Century
