Villa Kelusa

This was an absolute haven to stay at on our (very) recent trip in Bali. I'm writing this review on the return trip home, we left the property 6 hours ago and I am already thinking about a return visit.

We were a group of 6 women on our annual girls trip, Villa Kelusa worked perfectly- the complex consists of 2 separate villas with 2 large common areas, a central common area, 2 separate kitchens, 2 infinity pools, a media room and 2 bedrooms per villa - 1 king and 1 twin room, meaning all 6 of us could have a separate bed. You can rent the complex as a whole, as we did, or as 2 separate villas. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained- very spacious.

The location is in the village of Kelusa, about a 25 minute drive out of Ubud. The village location, in my opinion, is very much a part of the charm. It feels as though you are far, far away from the touristic centre of the south. The views from the Villa are over a deep ridge, forest and rice fields. Stunning.

Staff- Wayan Sudana, is the villa manager and a seriously great asset to the property. He is friendly, humble, kind, funny, a wealth of information and a very, very good person. There was a main cook, Ayu, and her staff who worked both in the kitchen and in our rooms, 2 gardeners (including Pak Made) and security staff at night. The staff all come from Kelusa Village. I found them all to be very friendly and they all did a great job.

Villas- both were beautifully decorated and well equipped. The linen, towels, etc were good quality and amenities such as toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, tissue, shampoo and conditioner were supplied. I slept upstairs in Villa Sapi- it had a wrap around verandah with amazing views and was really spacious. The bathroom was indoors with rain shower and a huge wooden bath. The lounge area downstairs was really gorgeous, very private and had the infinity pool running through it. It had an entertainment set up - TV, sound system, etc in this area. The downstairs bedroom had an attached outdoor/indoor bathroom. The other villa had an additional lounge area and glassed walls in the upstairs with a big bathroom overlooking the rice fields. The downstairs bedroom was bigger than our equivalent, also with an indoor/outdoor bathroom.

The common lounge area between the villas with large kitchen and dining table was where we ate each day. We tended to spend the day over at the other villa pool as it had a larger area for pool chairs and an undercover area to get away from the sun.

NOTE- The website doesn't do the property justice!!!! It is so much more impressive when you're actually there.

Activities- we had a daily return trip into Ubud included in the tariff which we used to eat out 2 of the nights and for 1 trip into town to shop and have a lunch. Wayan and Pak Made (gardener) took us out one afternoon for a rice field walk (highly recommended). There were lots of trips/activities on offer if you wanted them, we only had 4 full days and were keen to relax. We had massage ladies from the village come in over the stay which Wayan organised- also highly recommended and reasonably priced. We also were invited to observe a cremation in the village which was a fascinating experience, one that we felt privileged to participate in.

Food- all our breakfasts were included and you could basically have whatever you wanted including freshly blended juices. I really enjoyed them. Tea and coffee was included and other drinks charged at cost plus a %. We had a good selection of salads, Indonesian foods and sandwiches for lunches. We organised for Ayu to cook a fantastic Indonesian Gala Dinner for our last night- Sate Lilit and spring rolls to have with pre-dinner drinks, then the meal which included Tom Yum soup, fern tip salad, a bean dish, water spinach, 2 sambals, rice, corn fritters, pork with sweet soy and a spicy beef rendang. Dessert was a banana and sweet potato in palm sugar and a black rice pudding. It was amazing!!!

In summary, I can't speak highly enough about the experience. I loved it.
Thanks to the owner of the villa for putting it on the rental market, it is a wonderful place that you have created.

“Outstanding”

Thinking of an appropriate superlative for the Villa Kelusa experience that adequately describes the service and experience we had here is difficult. We have stayed in varying accommodation options around the world, but they get it totally right here. Truly outstanding...

You are 45 mins or so from the airport (and around 20 mins) from Ubud, but benefit from the peace and tranquillity of neighbouring rice paddies, traditional villages and absolutely breath taking views sitting above the trees with mountains and a volcano in the distance. The facilities are top notch, pristine, a mix of contemporary design with traditional Balinese flair and modern comforts. Despite the open aspect, you are afforded total privacy and absolute discretion from the attentive staff.

Wayan the villa manager is both keen to teach and learn. He helped arrange meals, drove us around, organised itineraries, booked restaurants, cultural events and took us on walking tours. He worked well beyond the call of duty. The team of staff at Wayan's disposal share his professionalism, his smile and willingness to help regardless of the time of day or night. We actually felt a bit guilty about how pampered we were. Sang (chef), Made (security), Putu (bell boy / cook), Nyoman (security) and Ketit (driver) all took pride in helping us. Even Puu the blind poodle chipped in with feel good factor. This stay did not feel like customer service or hospitality training in action, but staying with good friends who were proud of their own home, village and culture.

We were sad to leave.

“What a delightful find - it surpassed our every expectation!”

Our little family of four, including one 6yr old and one 2yr old, had the wonderful privilege of staying at this spectacular villa for 5 nights. Having previously loved staying at other Villas, our expectations were sky high and wow did Villa Kelusa deliver!

Firstly, the setting of the Villa is very special. Set at the end of a sleepy village, on the edge of a hill overlooking rice fields and jungle and mountains in the distance, the view is magnificent and tranquil. We loved the fact that the Villa was built mostly by villagers and that most of the staff live in the village too. It was very special to be invited into a family compound and take a picturesque hike (during which the lovely gardener carried our son) through the fields to the local temple.

The Villa itself - we stayed in Pondok Sapi - is even more beautiful than the photos on the website depict. The layout is ideal for families and there are endless spots for the children to explore and for the adults to quietly relax. We loved the floor to ceiling windows to take in that view, the stunning stone bathrooms and infinity pool. We also really appreciated small things like fresh flowers everywhere & the fact that the baby cot was super comfortable with a thick mattress.

Of course we had a little peek at Pondok Surya & although it is not as spacious nor suitable for little children (as the pool runs through the living area), I am sure my parents will be delighted to stay there when we return :-)

The Villa Staff are uniquely special. The House manager, Wayan, made us feel like royalty throughout our entire stay, pre -empting every possible wish and always going over and above our expectations. The kitchen team were especially lovely with our children (feeding the koi together was a daily ritual) which made us as parents feel even more relaxed knowing there were plenty of eyes looking out for them. Although we took the opportunity to dine in Ubud (Locavore is an incredible restaurant which you really MUST try), Sang Ayu (the chef)'s breakfasts, nasi goring & salads were delicious!

Interestingly, we followed our 5 days of bliss in Ubud by 5 more days at Club Med in Nusa Dua. Obviously both propositions are at opposite ends of the spectrum but we are already planning our return to Villa Kelusa, rather than Club Med (although that of course has many wonderful sides to it too!)

To the team at Villa Kelusa, thank you for allowing us to bank some lovely new memories and don't change a thing!
