much to be desired

Review of Mulia Resort
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 23 Dec 2022
For us the Mulia had plenty of pro's and con's. Unfortunately the con's outweigh the pros' by a mile! Our trip was booked via Luxury Escapes and we stayed in a Garden Villa. We had access to butlers, buggy transportation, all restaurants and daily afternoon tea and drinks.

If you are after a trip whereby staff dote over you and customer service is valued, this place is rated 10/10. We stayed in the villas. Our villa was stunning. The air-conditioning was ordinary and we struggled with the heat. The butlers went above and beyond to make our trip special. We were left luxurious amenities each day, cute towel animals and appreciated the attentive and prompt service. They left notes and kind gestures. We even had lovely messages formed from rocks out of the garden beds. We were able to WhatsApp chat staff and had immediate replies each and every-time. They assisted with spa & restaurant bookings, cabana access & even set up our Jacuzzi whilst we were away. We have never been treated to staff as attentive as those at the Mulia.

However the conveniences that come with paying premium prices for a luxurious stay left far to be desired. The cost of food and drink was significant. We paid $10 AUS for a bottle of water to share between two people. We had a few dinners included in our package, we utilised them. However if I did this trip again I would be inclined to venture outside the resort and find something better. Most restaurants were extremely quiet and the environment sometimes awkward and uncomfortable. We also found that this resort is 100% marketed towards the Korean tourist. This made it very difficult to find decent westernised food. We are cultured people and aren't afraid to try new things but everything seemed the same. Everyone raves about the breakfast. Although there is a lot of options. Nothing is worth eating, food is bland & lacks flavour and punch. Lots of heavy dishes you'd expect to see in a take away Chinese restaurant. Breakfast mostly consists of fish, noodles, meats covered in heavy sauces and curries. We tried all restaurants and were extremely disappointed everytime. We paid over $200 for Japanese Teppanyaki and were horrified with quality of meat, cooking technique and serving sizes. We left hungry! Cost can be dismissed if quality is on offer. However the quality of food was poor.

There was a serious lack of atmosphere throughout the resort. No music or any excitement. Swim up bar's have potential to offer good vibes but are dull and boring. The same drink menu was provided at all restaurants, bars & poolside access. Drinks were average and most cocktails were simple spirts mixed with softdrinks. It would have been nice to have more variety and hand crafted drinks on offer. Different menus should be provided at beach bar and pool however was the same as apparent 5 star restaurants. Cocktails were approx $16 each and not worth it. Toward the end of our trip we discovered that a lot of the nice restaurants in the area offer free pick up & drop off transportation. We took advantage of the afternoon tea that is provided. This was good, however I believe its a tactic to ensure you stay in the resort for dinner. Afternoon tea should be provided between 3-5pm, not 4-6pm.

We also tried the spa and treated ourselves to a couples treatment. Unfortunately we were unable to splurge on spa treatments as we originally intended as x1 couple massage and access to spa amenities cost over $440!. We ended up organising our treatments via alternative spa's in the area. We had the same massage with a similar quality (if not better) for $90 just down the road. The spa had a luxurious feel but all treatments were more expensive that high end spa's in Australia.

In summary, we wouldn't stay here again. This place didn't live up to the hype and we consider it overrated. Bali is overcrowded with luxury resorts and villas. I believe we would be able to find alternative options for a far more affordable price that are able to tick all the right boxes!

We absolutely loved our stay at the Mulia. The grounds and facilities are both amazing and beautiful, the staff are incredibly lovely and accommodating... our only regret was not staying longer. Big thumbs up to the boys behind the swim up bar near the beach pool - especially Dodi and Muli, we miss you guys already, and also to the lovely team at the Soleil Restaurant - look out for a waiter called Yoga, he always took special care of us. It feels unjust naming just a few staff, because we honestly didn't encounter one rude or unfriendly staff member... it was just difficult to remember everyone with their masks on (there is also A LOT of staff, you never have to look far for help or assistance). Hopefully next trip we'll learn your faces also. =)

We stayed in a lagoon room and walking out into a small section of our own lagoon every morning or evening was pure bliss.

Room tip: We loved our lagoon room!

Our favourite resort whenever we visit bali. Our second trip this year to Bali and without any hesitation we came back to stay at Mulia. Mulia resort bali is really child friendly and we always love the excellent service by the staff. We came with our big family (16 of us), stayed for a week and had a really memorable stay. Clean rooms, well maintained facilities, nice beach.

Breakfast at the cafe is always something we look forward to. Quality of foods is excellent. Great varieties, tasty foods.

Dinner at table 8 was really good too. Well cooked chinese foods far exceeding other places' buffet standard.

Edogin japanese foods are also delicious.

Soleil is also a must try. Great ambience with delicious foods.

Thank you Pak Pery, Pak Winarta, Pak Raja, Bu Yuni, Pak Natih, Bu Deska from the Cafe.
Bu Liana from the cafe/edogin.
Pak Edy from table 8.
Pak Sudi from Soleil.
Pak Alfig from splash pool life guard.
Pak Budiantara from housekeeping.

Excellent service by the staff who made our family holiday truly memorable. We will come back next time.
