Description: For over four decades we have welcomed visitors and friends from around the world to these hanging gardens of Kuta, offering them fine dining and calming respite from the ever-increasing hustle and bustle beyond our walls. Our current menu includes several house favourites that remain as popular today as when we introduced them in 1973.

We were staying at Poppies Hotel and since we were impressed by the hotel's standards we decided to book a table at the restaurant.

Unfortunately the restaurant standards don't come any close to the hotel standards.

The setting is beautiful so for that thumbs up. But both service and food were lacking.

We were welcomed at the door and asked whether we wanted smoking or non smoking meaning that our table was not even reserved. When we gently refused the first table offered as there were children on it and we wanted quiet the hostess looked at us badly...for what reason we have no idea.

The waitress taking our order took a while to come and we had to ask for the wine list as it was not offered to us. The waitress attending to our table featured only to take our order and to get our bill..in between we had several other persons coming..we were never asked how the meal was proceeding.

Food was nothing to write home about. All dishes served were piping hot so we had to wait to start eating. The spring rolls were way to oily, the pasta was small for the price but tasted good and the veg curry was far too spicy.

The finished plates remained infront of us for long and were only cleared when we asked ourselves for the dessert menu. Once we decided what to take we waited and waited..no one turned up so we asked someoene to get us the bill..which is when the original waitress came. When we left the money she counted it infont of us..a big no no! She seemed pretty upset there were no tips but we never leave tips if we are not happy with the service.

Breakfast: we ordered room service. Delivery was on time but we had another disappointment here too. We ordered eggs benedict and they came with ham underneath...and i am vegeterian. I did not say anything and just removed the ham thinking maybe it's the way they are served but when my husband checked the menu no ham was mentioned.

Thank you for taking the time to give us such a careful and helpful review. We apologise for your disappointment.

First of all, I'd like to stress that we strive for the same high standards at both properties, which are under the same ownership and management. It is a fact however, that once the high standards have been reached in a small hotel, it's a lot easier to maintain them, than it is in a restaurant - especially one handling the numbers that we handle on occasion. Thus, things do go wrong very easily, and when they do, we hope that they are reported to us, so that we can work on correcting things.

Forgive me, but your perception regarding whether a table was or was not reserved for you, is not correct. We have a Reservations book, and we know exactly how many tables have been reserved, by whom, and from where, and this information has been recorded carefully. At the hotel's Reception desk, and also on our website Table Reservations page, we may not ask whether guests prefer smoking or non-smoking - these days we assume they expect a non-smoking a table. However, as it's still permitted in Bali to smoke in outdoor restaurants, the hostess is currently asked by management to just check with every guest as they are shown a table, in case they would prefer a smoking table. The whole smoking and non-smoking issue is a work in progress in Bali, and we expect that more fine-tuning to our own system will take place in the future.

We're sorry if the waitress looked at you badly - we will try to remind our staff never to do this.

We're also sorry you were not offered the Wine List - bad mistake. Sorry too that no one came and asked the customary "Is everything all right" - also a bad mistake.

A lot of points in the next sentence - piping hot food; that's a very controversial point. We do try very hard to serve food hot when that's the way it should be - not so important for Indonesian food (and that's often a bone of contention), but for western food... well, it's very hard to teach our young Indonesian staff that hot never means too hot... not easy to plan either, from the pot or oven to the table. We've spent many hours trying to ensure that our Spring Rolls are not oily - seem to have failed on that too. Our apologies. Small pasta - will have a look at that, as indeed I sometimes think it's borderline myself! The Vegetable Curry, is usually described as being very mild, so I don't know what can have happened on that day.

Regarding plate clearance, and dessert ordering, our service was clearly lacking, and once again please accept apologies.

I am very surprised and perplexed by your next observation, however - of course our staff are instructed to count cash money in front of our Guests, since this is absolutely essential, given the scope for misunderstanding with Indonesian banknotes. There are no commas, as you surely have observed, and 10000 is easily mistaken for 100000, or for 1000000!! We would have endless arguments and receive frequent accusations, were we not to do this. It's par for the course in Indonesia, until the government introduces commas, or cuts off 2 or 3 zeros. Your waitress was certainly NOT soliciting a tip, she was just making sure that she had counted the money correctly, and that you were happy with that. She is paid properly, and is proud to be part of our team, and would not last long if she adopted such an attitude.

Lastly Eggs Benedict! Certainly that's the way we serve them, and there's really no need for us to mention ham on our menu, as it's universally known that Eggs Benedict come(s) with either ham or bacon, or Canadian bacon, or Parma ham. Please google Eggs Benedict.

Once again, thank you for your detailed review. I have tried to address each point as appropriately as I can. This is the way we try to run Poppies, with attention to detail, and much time well spent.

We hope to welcome you back some day.

The setting is beautiful but food was average.. worst mei goreng and nasi goreng we had on trip and garlic bread was pathetic. We travelled up from tuban with high expectations but were let down, could have had a better meal for cheaper closer to our hotel.

Thank you for your review. The difficulty we face, when having a restaurant with an established reputation is that everyone arrives at it with some kind of expectation or other. In this case, you clearly expected to be served Garlic Bread made from slices of French bread, individually buttered, and with a sprinkle of parsley, and probably grilled under a salamander, and perhaps served in foil.

It says clearly on the menu "Poppies Garlic Bread - since the 70s, served our own way" - ours is very generous, and looks totally inelegant, but the taste is amazing!! A long way from being 'pathetic'.

Mi Goreng, and Nasi Goreng - flabbergasted. Both continually earn high praise, and have been fine tuned over many years to please our customers' taste-buds and appetites.

It would have been so much more helpful to have been told the REASONS for your perceptions, so that we could look into things and improve where necessary.

We visited here as a recommendation for a friend. It did not disappoint, it is down a side street but if your down the right one they have signs telling you which direction! The food was the best we have tasted in Bali and the setting was beautiful! The staff amazing also, very attentive and food served in good time. We had a selection of starters and shush kebab and beef curry for main. They also offer an Indonesian platter or fish platter which looked amazing! If you get a chance pop by!
