Has recently been renovated
It is located within 400mtrs of the Taj within the restricted area.has huge open areas and lawns with peacocks in them, which gives you great views of the Taj, perhaps even better than the one from Oberoi Amarvilas (where we stayed later)
we stated in the Tented Swiss Cottages which is pretty cool.luxury tent with ac/fridge/cable tv & clean bath/toilets
the room service is good
we had dinner once here and was well prepared
although it is run by the state govt., it doesn't have any of the govt hangovers, except for the big entry book when you checkin.staff are friendly and don't stick around for tips like else where.Indians get treated on par with foreigners unlike some other places.
Couldn't understand why more people go here...
We had few mosquitos but ignorable.
Infact UP tourism have online booking too

It was an unplanned stay. We started for Agra from Delhi on a Friday and realised halfway that the Taj Mahal is closed today.
A quick search and a phone call made teh choice easy.

This hotel is located near the East Gate of Taj Mahal. The surrounding is secure as its in side the secured zone for Taj Mahal.

The hotel is small with an option to stay in the tents. We loved it. and it comes very easy on your pocket. (Rs1300 to 2600/night withb/f) Keep in mind that you are surrounded by jungle so flies, mosqutoes are unavoidable.

The restaurent is not very impressive, but you have many small options in teh bazar near East gate.

TM is just 5 mins walk and those who wish to visit at the dawn, could buy the ticket a day before and move straight to TM the next day.
U also have an option of battery operated cars to take you to the ticket stall (Shilpgram)

Later, you may just walk a lilttle further to river Yamuna from the east gate (5 Mins) and take a view of TM from the river banks. at Rs 100 you may also hire a small boat for 30 mins.

It would be great to spend an evening on the hotel lawns on the background of TM you can see the dome and towers surrounded by green trees and peacocks to accompany you.

If you love luxury, this is not the place to choose and for those, there are plenty of options of 5* hotels.

Room Tip: Keep odomos or similar cream handy.

Although the hotel is undergoing a major renovation and facelift (January 2011), it is a reasonable hotel. The location is simply awesome, barely 300 meteres from the Eastern gate of the Taj, a location, no one can match. Even the Oberoi Amarvilas is down the road.
I stayed in the swiss cottage C-5 (it is basically a furnished tent). These are well furnished tents with heaters, air conditioners, hand dryer, geysers. But, it is advisable not to stay in those tents during winter, a mistake I committed. The nights are unbearable with the cold. There are about 8 normal AC rooms available at much cheaper rate which should be preferred.
The hotel comes with a CP plan although, there are a few varieties in the breakfast (alu-paratha/puri-bhaji/toast-omlette). Just opposite the entrance, there is a restaurant Ambika, which serves good Bengali food.
Room service is so-so, considering the fact that you are staying in a government accomodation.

Due to its proximity to the Taj Mahal, our car couldn't get to the hotel. So we shlepped our bags the last 500 meters to the hotel. We were the only guests. The rooms were large with high ceilings, but their original glory had faded to stained walls and dripping sinks. Because it is a gov't hotel, too much paperwork to fill out upon arrival. Good food, and the kitchen staff were very friendly. If you stay here, don't forget to bring your sense of humor. Nice gardens with a view of the Taj Mahal.

reached agra by delhi shatabdi at 8.30am on 27th nov. people at the up tourism counter were very friendly and cooperative and gave us the directions. took a prepaid auto to shipgram (85 bucks). there auto wallahs tried to convince us that the hotel was very far away when it really was within walking distance.
stayed in one of the swiss cottages.
clean/ complimentary coke and bottle of mineral water for both of us.
staff friendly but nonchalant- arranged a car for fatehpur sikri
view from the mound was great to say the least. and the place is so quiet - out of bounds of touts that agra is so full of.
its very close to east gate of taj mahal and autos go straight uo to the east gate.
the tent becomes a bit chilly at night but theres a room heater.
complimentary breakfast was average.
couldnt afford amarvilas but i think taj khema made up for that in more ways than one
