We booked Pratap Bhawan just one day before arriving in Udaipur - our flight was cancelled so we ended up in a taxi from Jaipur, arriving at 10.30pm instead of 4pm, and suffering from terrible travel sickness. The staff were waiting outside to assist us from the taxi and immediately made sure we were comfortable.
The two brothers who own the hotel were very friendly and helpful, assisting us with the rest of our journey through Rajasthan, and making us feel welcome with a professional but informal approach.
However, we were quite shocked as we decided on here based on the August 2011 Lonely Planet gude, which priced PB at 500-800 rupees, but when we booked it had already increased to 2000 rupees.
They are clearly working hard on improving their service, but I think the standard doesn't quite deserve the asking price just yet. As the power cuts here are from 7-9am, they would do well to invest in a generator, especially as our shower room had no natural light.
They were let down by some of their staff who, although very friendly and helpful, were also quite laid back - when we checked out we left at 8am and, despite reassurances throughout the previous day by the owners and staff that we could have breakfast at 7.30am, there was no one in the rooftop restaurant to serve this - this was made all the more frustratin as we could see other hotel dining rooms from here, where their guests were happily tucking in to their breakfast.
The room service menu also gave a 15 rupee charge for bottled water, but when we asked for this the staff charged us 20 rupees (I suspect if the owners were around at this time this wouldn't have happened).
Despite these setbacks, I would happily stay here again, and believe the brothers are working hard to raise the standard.
