The mighty Brahmaputra makes for captivating sight. We took a ferry to Majuli Island - the largest inhabited river island in the world. The flow of the water and the expanse of the river is truly mesmerizing. The boat ride was delightful too, though a little crowded.

Our trip up the Brahmaputra with Assam Bengal Navigation, far exceeded my expectations. I would recommend taking this cruise during milder seasons ... NOV was perfect for us, there were 11 of us and we had the riverboat to ourselves with a crew of 24! Our accommodation on the MV Charaidew was great - all cabins are twins, with en suites (toilet, basin and shower, even hair-dryer), air-con (I opted to open my window - fly screen kept shut). AC voltage in cabins to recharge cameras. The meals - fabulous. Normal breakfasts, lunch & dinner Indian style buffet, even had an evening meal on the riverbank - fantastic!. Alcohol - Indian .. was reasonably priced, I would order a bottle of Indian red and drink it over several nights. So as I said, reasonable, considering Indian Govt now impose a 30% VAT! Laundry was the best - very cheap and well done!. The Top Deck lounge area was great, just sit, with a tea, coffee or g&t and watch the world go by - doing all of 4 knots! We moored at night, mostly against the riverbank and every morning around 0700, crew casted-off as we had our first coffee in bow lounge - to continue up river. The daily excursions (every morning a briefing sheet placed in the cabin) detailing the visits to local riverside farms, villages were exceptional, we even undertook white-water rafting. Each night we had history briefings in the bar, after viewing the most gorgeous of sunsets! Crew - all were wonderful, Chef even gave us a cooking lesson - curry, of course! There are no negatives I could say about this trip, except to say I wish I had know how great it was, because I would have liked to continue further up river....
Note for future travellers - the generators are turned off 2300 - 0600 to provide quiet; ABN provide each cabin with torches should you need to move around your cabin during that time.

My husband an I did the Ganges cruise from Calcutta to Farakka over this last Christmas. It was a delight. The boat was comfortable, the staff attentive and the food delicious. Every day we had a couple of excursions to either temples, mosques or villages. We were accompanied by one young guide who explained the history and another guide who was a naturalist who pointed out the birds trees etc. When not out and about we sat either in our cabin or on deck and watched the world go by.I thoroughly recommend this as a way to see rural India..

We went on a boat ride in the Brahmaputra on our return from Dirang and onwards Kaziranga. Our driver had informed us that there are river dolphins that can be seen, so we decided to go. We had hired a boat for our group at INR 2000 and they took us for a hour long boat ride. We did see a few minor glimpses of the dolphin, but not anything clearly.

However the boat ride itself was very pleasing. the brahmaputra looks beautiful during sunset and the Kolia Bhomora Setu bridge looks amazing when you are looking at it from below.

Sunset at brahmaputra is definitely recommended, but one should negotiate the price as INR 2000 is a little steep.

A small but very comfortable boat (ABN Sukapha). The on board facilities were excellent including the cabins. Each had good air conditioning in them. The crew were pleasant, helpful and ensured we enjoyed a wonderful cruise.
Each day we had stops in either the morning or in morning and afternoon as well. It could be said that some of the shore trips were not all that worthwhile, but they got us off the boat and we had an opportunity to see the real India close up. On the trips ashore we met such people as Orson Wells! Yes that was the real name of the local priest we met, who larger than life and so friendly. We also had a great adventure later that day when we stopped and the plan was to have a cycle rickshaw ride into the town to see the temple with the Banyon tree. Due to it being monsoon season the river was a little high you could say, but this did not deter us at all. We were as a party all willing to roll out trouser legs up and have a little paddle, but oh no the rickshaw boss was having none of that. He got his guys to bring a rickshaw to where our country boat (the boat that you use to / from the ship if it can’t dock close) had got to and we through various manoeuvres and without anyone getting wet transferred to the rickshaw, who then took us though about three feet of water to dry land where we regrouped and went on our rides. This was great fun and made the trip so much more enjoyable and entertaining.

In an evening at the daily 7 p.m. briefing we went through what we had done that day and what was planned for the next day. The tour guide would also give us an insight into Indian history usually connected with the visits. During the cruise we also had the servcies of a naturalist on baord who again had woinderful knowledge which he shared with us.

We thoroughly enjoyed our cruise. The only thing that may be of interest to others is that whilst on the cruise you do not pay for things, you simply add them to your room and on the last evening you settle up. This can be for such things as laundry, any gifts you buy from them or your bar bill as all beverages apart from water, tea and coffee are chargeable. The ship does accept credit cards but be aware that sometimes the machine doesn’t work and so have cash on hand as a back-up.
