“A fantastic home away from home!”

This was the perfect set up for our extended family. My husband and I, with our 5 month old stayed in the upper apartment and my parents rented the lower apartment of Orchidea for a whole month. We were met at the airport by Walter who was charming and helpful. Ruth greeted us at the apartment when we arrived to show us around (her English is excellent).

Much to our delight, we found out that bottled water and regular cleaning services were included in the very affordable price of this rental. The apartments were very comfortable and felt spacious and safe. Downtown was only a 10 minute walk away. Other people complain about the noise of this place - I think that the only thing that bothered us was what we call the "Party Train" which went by at high speed over the speed bump right out front with music blasting and riders hooting many times per night. However, I was still able to sleep through it, and so was our son (who slept in the back room).

The kitchen was well stocked and we found it easy and enjoyable to prepare our own food (though buying groceries was far pricier than we imagined!) We had delicious fresh fruit with yogurt and granola every morning (locally they grow papaya, watermelon, mango, cantaloupe, banana, strawberries, pineapple).

The WiFi was fairly slow (as we were warned about) but it was really nice to have it!

The surrounding vines and greenery (hibiscus flowers that you can make into iced tea) were lovely, and we made great use of the hammock and the garden patio out front where we ate all of our meals.

There was no laundry on site, but we found that Lavandaria Monyfri on the way to Darwin Research station was excellent. They remembered us after the first time so we didn't even need to write down our information or ask for our laundry - they simply brought it to us when we approached the counter. It was approximately $5 per load for a large bag (pay by weight).

We discovered where the locals shop (El Mercado for fresh produce) and eat (Los Kioskos - a series of little eateries with tables in the streets that really get going around 6:30pm) and enjoyed snorkelling nearby at the Darwin Research Station, as well as in front of Finch Bay Hotel (take a boat taxi) at low tide. We went out diving with nearby Scuba Iguana several times and highly recommend them.

I highly recommend Orchidea. It was so affordable compared to everything else we found. And, CactusPad next door looked awesome too. That was fully booked or we would may stayed there.... but having two apartments was really nice. We had privacy, but also had good times together as a group.

Management Response

Great feedback. Thanks so much for that as this should paint a better picture for prospective clients.
I should write a note about the 'Party Train'. It's a typical thing to do for locals in Ecuadorian villages and runs approximately half-hourly in the evening until about 10pm from Thursday-Saturday. (Feel free to correct variations on time and days). It is noisy as it briefly passes, playing the most popular tunes as it rushes along. Families and groups of friends will board for the 15-minutes ride as it ventures all around the town.
I'm not sure whether it is still going since mid-Feb when it was involved in an accident.

“Very nice stay in a beautiful place.”

Orchidea is in a quiet neighborhood in Santa Cruz, and still very walkable. My husband and I could walk to the Darwin Center, which also has a nice swimming beach. It was easy to walk into town to grocery stores and restaurants. Also an inexpensive cab ride. We had been traveling for a few weeks so it was great to have a kitchen and a large place instead of a hotel room.

“Wonderful month in Orchidea”

We have recently returned from staying for a month downstairs in Orchidea. We had a wonderful time. We cooked for ourselves and sat outside in the front garden eating our meals, alongside Darwin Finches and Lava Lizards! We took day boat trips to other islands, as well as a three night trip to Isabela Island. The day trips were all organised by Enrique, the guide who looks after the apartment. He was exceedingly helpful and accommodating and helped us out with anything we wanted, including taxis and any trips we wanted to take.

All the trips were great and we saw all the wonderful wildlife that we wanted to see - from a huge pod of dolphins, to baby Blue-Footed Boobies, Penguins, Sea Lions, Giant Tortoises, Turtles, Rays, Sharks, Marine Iguanas, Land Iguanas, Frigate Birds, Pelicans,... I really recommend staying on Santa Cruz for an expended period and spacing out the day trips, if you have time. Puerto Ayora is an interesting and relaxing place to stay. There are lots of restaurants within easy walking distance of Orchidea. The Charles Darwin Centre and a small beach are also very close. The port and supermarket are about 15 minutes walk away, or $1 taxi ride if it is hot! A great local bakers is a few minutes walk away, as is the bank and the fresh fish market (a tourist attraction as well as a great place to buy fish caught that day or afternoon, or to eat the Galapagos version of Fish and Chips!) . The footpath to Tortuga Bay is about 20 minutes walk away and for $1 each you can catch the taxi boats to a lovely beach at Finch Bay.

I recommend the half day glass bottom boat trip - we did this a couple of times - not for the glass bottom, but for the bay trip. It visits three sites, for a combination of snorkelling (we saw a giant pacific turtle) and guided walks. And it doesn't involve too much time being tossed around in a boat!

The apartment was a perfect size for the 2 or 3 of us and was kept clean by Martha, the housekeeper, who was very helpful to our needs throughout our stay. We particularly recommend the downstairs apartment if, like us, you intend to cook for yourselves, as we were able to eat on the table in the garden each evening. (The upstairs apartment had a balcony with a hammock).

The apartment had four large wall fans - one in each bedroom and two in the main area, which worked really well to circulate the air and keep it cool. We didn't feel as though we needed air conditioning, as this was sufficient.
