This is probably the nicest hotel you can get in the area - still quite new, staff is extremely friendly and helpful, very clean, food was good. Recommend arroz con mariscos if you like sea food! The wifi works very well. The hotel is quite remote from the amenities and town just make sure you are aware of this as will need to take public bus or a taxi.
Now the rooms are quite small unless you go for a suite (I am told), there is a huge hotel next door being built so noise is significant and it obstructs entirely the views and most of the sun, if you are after sunbathing next to the pool. Hotel has sun loungers on the beach as well but be aware beach is public so you will be harrassed by the local vendors every 3 mins or so. The sand is blackish.
The hotel itself has further potential to develop as common areas are kind of empty and they could do more by adding some even simple sofas and chairs for guests to relax on the third floor next to the restaurant. Especially when it rains (and it does rain tropically believe me) there is nowhere to hang out. I would also recommend even a small business center - as much as this is meant for holidays these days ppl work anywhere and anytime and there isnt really a space for this (again apart from the room).
There isnt much in this area - a small shopping center Zazue is 15min walk away with basic restaurants and shops when you get tired of hotel food and that is about it.

We visited the hotel for 4 days. Rooms were clean and spacious. The balconies have limited view due to few constructions sites going around, but it was great to sit out. Breakfast was limited but sufficient and nice. The beach was 4 min walk, and the beach team who looks after the hotel umbrellas and chairs were great and attentive. There are still a few vendors as it’s not a private beach. The only downside is that the hotel amenities are shared with a residential tower, so there might be conflict of interest from staff wanted the please the hotel guest vs the property owners ( or their tenants)

We did a last minute check in to the hotel and were pleasantly surprised. The staff was amazing. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating. The hotel is a minute away from the beach and also provides beach chairs and umbrellas. Breakfast was great and all in all a very nice family holiday.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Mercure Santa Marta this past weekend when we attended a wedding. The hotel itself is nice, modern, had working wifi. My main issues were with the major construction going on next door. We were unable to enjoy the pool due to the noise and debris. I went on the balcony of our room the first morning and was immediately staring at the workers across the way. We also had to walk through major construction on our way the beach, proceeded to be harassed and followed by people trying to sell 'all sorts of things'. We did not feel safe going out on the beach, so we went back to our hotel. The front desk staff was nice and tried to accommodate us. We did have issues trying to get service at the bars.

Hotel was excellent. Restaurant was pleasant surprise, with excellent food for good price. Only small issue was the road leading from main road into hotel, which is poorly maintained. Overall experience was wonderful.
