Owner description: Cartagena was always a desirable conquest for pirates and enemies of the Spanish Crown; and for this reason, the defense of the city from these threats was a question of priority for its inhabitants from the first decades of the existence of the city. Once the primitive nucleus of Cartagena and the outlying district of Getsemani were fortified, there was a need to erect a structure on San Lazaro Hill that would prevent an enemy attack from its peak, since the hill dominated the walls and the only entrance to the city, the Media Luna Entrance in Getsemani. In addition, this hill was the intermediate point between the city and the nearby Popa Peak, where some heavy guns and canons were installed between 1769 and 1780 to cross fire with the castle and make an enemy attack more difficult from the large beach of Playon Grande in Pie de la Popa.

we did the audio tour and it was completely worth it! we walked there from our hotel and purchased our tickets, then got the audio tour added. they give you devices that look like walkie talkies and a map to guide yourself around. it takes about 1 hour total. you go to each landmark on the map and enter the number to hear historical information about that specific spot. the castle itself is incredible! i don't want to give details about how it looks because it is worth it to find out yourself!! we loved it! BRING WATER & be aware that there is only one bathroom (it's on the same platform as landmark 9)

We went and toured the castle with her children. We highly recommend you obtain the audio tour as it provides a great history of the castle. Without the audio tour so much would be lost while walking this massive structure. This tour is not for someone not in good shape and would not be recommended for the elderly and less they are an excellent physical shape as the ramps are very very steep to climb. We also recommend that you go early in the morning we arrive just after opening yet by 9 o’clock in the morning it was extremely hot. Also remember to bring the water in with you as the only water available in the castle in the gift shop all the way at the top. The castle has a number of hidden passages that you can walk through and see how the soldiers would pass between the different areas of the castle. The kids and adults all loved this experience.

San Felipe d Barajas is called a castle but it was built as a major military fortification over many years. If you speak English, an English speaking guide is essential. There are virtually no signs. There are a lot of unique defensive features that would go unnoticed without explanation. During the Spanish mining of gold in South America, Cartagena was routinely attacked by other European countries. This fort was a key defense.
