I returned after four years to find an even better experience and more polished service.
The Santa Clara is a lovely hotel with lots of beautiful areas to enjoy, good food, service and facilities. I visited other hotels for dinner and lunches while in Cartagena, but still think the Santa Clara has the edge interms of atmosphere, service and facilities.
Do spend a night on the island if you are staying for a week as the one night trip is a little adventure. Speed boat transfer, private beaches, tropical storms at night and lots to explore.

Room tip: If in the new wings ask for an upper floor central to the pool, there are modernised rooms that are recent and quite nicely decorated, however the classic styles are acceptable.

The hotel has a vey nice ambiance. The city is very charming. The rooms are big and very comfortable. I recommend staying there. the staff was extremely helpful.

there was a beautiful garden with birds that would sow up on breakfast time to be fed. I was reading the book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez that lives very close from the hotel. it was an unique experience

Went to the Santa Clara for pre dinner drinks (excellent cocktails) and were amazed at the beauty of the building and the interior courtyard. A waiter explained the building dates back to the 17th century when it was a monastry and hospital. The courtyard is filled with trees, plants, shrubs and a water feature with seating both in the centre and under the arches. Once it is dark the place comes alive with candle light. The swimming pool to the right of reception is glorious. The formal restaurant looks very special but there is a less formal brasserie fronting over to the pool area. Main bar is very inviting.

Beautiful 17th century building surrounding a huge, lush patio garden. There is a modern wing but we stayed in the old (original) part of the hotel, and the surroundings are stunning.
The casual dining restaurant has tables in the shaded cloister around the patio, and we were delighted to find that the menu included lovely ceviche and lots of delicious fresh salads (some with seafood). Which meant we could have a healthy lunch -- and then return to the patio in the evening for drinks and dinner at some of Cartagena's many excellent restaurants with a clear conscience!
The staff were outstanding, and the spa is also excellent (not always the case in hotels, I've found). Had possibly the best manicure of a lifetime, and a blissful massage (thank you, Maria Claudia).
We were there for 10 days and were happy to find that the guests were primarily from Latin (rather than North) America -- stylish couples and charming families with well-behaved children. (However, the staff do speak good English, in addition to Spanish and, often, French and Portuguese.)
The Santa Clara more than lives up to its reputation; it's expensive, and worth every penny.

Room tip: We stayed in the old part of the hotel, but I believe the rooms in the new wing are also lovely -- and have a view of the pool. It just depends on what you prefer.

This hotel is, if you prefer an experience that is authentic, the place to be set in a perfect part of the picturesque part of old Cartagena. Set in a 17th c. Monastery complete with a stunning courtyard and 5 metre ceilings it is a romantic, genuine setting that is grand yet intimate. The check in was gracious as you absorb the luxury of the spaces you occupy, the decor was historical and functional when necessary, the service superior.

The rooms in the old monastic part are quaint and different but modern and efficient, though wifi not strong enough in our room, maybe I should have left the iPad behind! The more modern rooms in the Republic wing were also nice overlooking the pool or the sea.

The restaurant 1621 is worth a visit and their wine tasting room very special. Breakfasts were superb with much local fruit and other delicacies including good strong Colombian coffee.

The pool was good and a welcome relief to the considerable heat and humidity in September.
I didn't try the spa but heard only good reports about it.

Finally, the great service from Cesar, Luis and Gustavo for whom nothing was a problem made it all worth it. But, all the above comes at a price and for a week of spoiling, go for it.

The location is also prime on San Diego Plaza, must try the lively restaurant Juan del Mar where the owner/chef can't resist taking the microphone and singing with the band or dancing with a guest, good food, good fun.

All in all a great experience, we'll be back Andrea!
