Terrible, terrible. Terrible!

I have been here 4 years ago, and the hotel was a "like 4 stars". Now it doesn´t reach 2 stars standard...

Poor, really poor english. I speak mandarin, but my coleeges don´t--- they have had from comic to tragic experiences with the unexperienced, newbie, almost stupid staff.

The hotel didn´t respect the reservation, charged more than stipulated and lock the room door 2 days before check out, and demanded an aditional deposit in cash to unlock it. It took me 45 minutes to reach my room again...

Staff is not helpful, cannot write down an adress in Chinese, room is dirty, some lights are not working, we wake up several times and found the hot water was not working (-24 ºC outside...)

At check in, the girl at desk wrote "3000" insted of "3900" in the bill for the deposit... that resulted in a door locked some days ago for several of us.

The buffet is more expensive than the Kempisky or even the sheraton, and it is composed of old foos, dry, and really, really poor presented.

Restaurants attend with low lights, and the kitchen seems to be closed if no gest arrives...

HORRIBLE!

(excuse my english)

Best avoid this one!

Staff are comatose most of the time and to say that they speak basic English would be a gross overstatement.

Getting served in the lobby bar requires you to find staff first, not an easy job I can tell you.
Breakfast is generally alright, although you may grow old and weak waiting for somebody to bring you coffee or tea. I suggest you just go and find some yourself.
If you want a fried egg bring a newspaper or a book - you will be there for quite some time.
Finally a note on rooms at the Mirage:
Incredibly it is not just hotel guests that enjoy the comforts of these rooms - staff do as well!
I came back one evening to find two members of the kitchen staff watching TV in the room opposite mine. They were lying on the beds with their shoes on, in uniform, chefs hats firmly in place. The door was wide open and the volume loud enough for me to enjoy the program from my room too. Oh, and they had a key-card which was fortunate for them...
I did mention all of this to the duty manager in the lobby but I do not know if he understood. He looked very puzzled...

I would not stay at the Mirage again - who know's what else they get up to in those rooms...

Please note: all my comments must be seen as influenced by two weeks of bad drains, poor food and bed bugs in Uzbekistan!

Coming out to China meant an immediate feeling of freedom - smog, traffic and car horns were part of the experience in getting me to the Mirage Hotel. For better or for worse, this meant a mental return to the West, certainly to, say, Ritz-Carlton standards of hostelry. Service level, from the door captains, bellhops and reception was superb; delivered without analysis or hidden question. When you wanted something done, it got done. I was surprised that so many of the staff spoke competent English.

My room was like a million other hotel rooms except that it seemed better looked after, and equipped with more little gizmo's and packets: some of these I took to equip myself for the cross-China train journey ahead. My bathroom was the best hotel bathroom I have had for some years - everything worked, and worked (if you wanted it so to work) at sustained high pressure. My laundry was all done on my day of arrival, even though I did not arrive until midday.

I enjoyed it; perhaps it was just the contrast with Uzbekistan. But I think that this was a seriously good hotel, well up to four-star standard, and I think, above.
