Strongly recommend visiting Tongli and Tuisi garden than zhouzhuang (on a weekday) if you are into photography, some quiet moments for reflection and cultural immersion. Unlike the UNESCO gardens in Suzhou, this garden is part of a historic home which still features some of the original indoor decor and some furnitures. Try to visit in the afternoon near closing time or earliest in the morning. The koi pond is amazing because of the synchronous manner in which they swim !

Tuisi Garden is part of Tongli water town and consists of a pond surrounded by ancient buildings. Pleasant on the eye but little else.

Certainly equal to the gardens in Suzhou. Again the home of a retired senior official. Rooms of the house laid around a central pond with fish, rockeries and interesting planting. Relatively small and compact.
With a guide you should get an understanding about the features of the house and gardens, and the way of life of a wealthy individual, his wife and servants.

Visited a lot of gardens in Suzhou, all of them are different. This is in my eye the most beautiful, in fact this is my second time to Tongli, mostly for visiting this particular garden again.

It's smaller compared to most gardens, compact but yet not cramped in design & layout, very clever design. Every angle or direction you look, there is a different view. Also, it's less crowded than the gardens that are in Suzhou city.

Tips: 1. Go very early before the tour buses/ crowd arrive, I was always the first tourist there during my few nights stay in Tongli.
2. Take a rest when it's crowded, there are benches upstairs in the garden, best part, its with view to the pond! The crowd will be gone very soon as most tourists only spend a maximum of 30 minutes in a garden.
3. Worth to stay in Tongli for a night or 2 if like quite town, if you have time.

Fun: Not sure how many found a hidden stairway camouflaged as a little stone hill.

one of the very first tourists to get in as soon as the door was opened so I pretty much had the entire Tui Si Garden for myself!

very elegant and intimate, one could easily spend a good few hours here.

as one of the previous reviewers has commented, it is best to visit with a private guide who can paint a fuller context of these gardens in order to truly appreciate them! all ancient Chinese buildings (temples, private gardens and residentials included) are built more than just for their primary function, safety, display of wealth and reflection of taste, there are also tonnes of subtle meanings and blessings hidden within.
