We spent only one night. Nice lodge concept, well placed in old Suzhou. Old chinese decor in the rooms, but the carpets stink, the smell is just unbearable. Poor service also.

This hotel is just lovely. The original building is from the Ming Dynasty, and the renovations retain a lot of the original architectural charm. The whole place is filled with interesting furniture, and from the moment you walk into the lobby, you are surrounded by beautiful, traditional decor. Our room had a balcony overlooking a little garden. The bathrooms have been well updated, and are comfortably modern, but it is clear that effort was made to keep the historic style and feel of the hotel.

We ate breakfast at the hotel several times. There are 3 different options for breakfast. It is served across the street, next to the canal. If the weather is nice, you can eat outdoors and watch the action along the canal.

The staff was very nice and the people at the desk spoke enough English to help us with what we needed.

Some parts of Suzhou are very modern and have lots of shops and restaurants. You can walk to the shopping area from the hotel, but the hotel itself is situated along the canal by a pedestrian street. This street is very charming, and leads to some of the major gardens. I recommend going out on a walk early in the morning, when the street is quietest.

I would definitely stay here again. It has a rare ambiance that makes it quite special.

This is a charming hotel as others have said but it can be hard to find. From Lindun Rd going north make a right where you see a Keda foodmart and a police kiosk. Many taxi drivers and even locals don't know this lodge. Taxi drivers aren't allow to turn into the lane so you will have to drag your luggage 300m to just before the canal. Also we tried making reservations, but they didn't answer their phone the half dozen times we called. If you go on a weekday, non holiday, they will likely have rooms.

This is a lodge of real character in an ideal location. Those who require much in the way of service should be ware. We had a one step up room and had access to three rooms--one we rejected (just because of the bed setup) and one we had to move from after that building was without hot water. All were huge suites. The house staff spoke limited English and could not provide any guidance on much of anything. They misdirected us on bike renting though bikes were rented across the bridge at the youth hostel. They were kind and meant well, but young and not well informed.

The reception and sitting area at the entrance were without heat. It was November and quite chilly. We had good heat in the room, and hot water after the move.

Room Tip: Consider whether you can handle stairs to the bed.

My husband and I traveled to Suzhou with our daughter and her roommate while they were teaching in Shanghai for a year. The Ping Jiang Lodge (once we found it) was a perfect place to have an authentic Chinese experience. The nightlife along the canal was very fun to see and the rooms were very comfortable.
