This hotel is just lovely. The original building is from the Ming Dynasty, and the renovations retain a lot of the original architectural charm. The whole place is filled with interesting furniture, and from the moment you walk into the lobby, you are surrounded by beautiful, traditional decor. Our room had a balcony overlooking a little garden. The bathrooms have been well updated, and are comfortably modern, but it is clear that effort was made to keep the historic style and feel of the hotel.
We ate breakfast at the hotel several times. There are 3 different options for breakfast. It is served across the street, next to the canal. If the weather is nice, you can eat outdoors and watch the action along the canal.
The staff was very nice and the people at the desk spoke enough English to help us with what we needed.
Some parts of Suzhou are very modern and have lots of shops and restaurants. You can walk to the shopping area from the hotel, but the hotel itself is situated along the canal by a pedestrian street. This street is very charming, and leads to some of the major gardens. I recommend going out on a walk early in the morning, when the street is quietest.
I would definitely stay here again. It has a rare ambiance that makes it quite special.
