I have stayed here several times for business purposes. The hotel is conveniently located if you have to be at Wuhan University. Rooms are quite big, the bath room is Ok, wifi works. The mosquito problem that I mentioned in the past has been solved apparently. It is a pity that there is no bar. In the lounge you can get something until 22.00hr but that’s all. The new Wuhan Opera House is only steps away and the area is nicely illuminated in the evening.

Room Tip: higher floors have nicer view

The Hong Yi Hotel is fairly new, has a fine central location, with views over the East Lake.
You can take a pleasant stroll around the banks or jog if inclined. The general decor and design of the edifice are passable if not outstanding but the place was very clean and smart. It is owned by the local government and the university, I was told. Such hotels now achieve a creditable standard in the PRC.

The room I was given was on an upper floor, was indeed large and was quite well-furnished, with a very comfortable bed and soft pillows. Although jet-lagged, I had no trouble getting a sound night's sleep. It was very quiet at night, as the sound-proofing was first-class.There was no BBC World News but CNN was available.

The breakfast buffet was very Chinese, with a few Western dishes thrown in. Although advertised from 6am, there was little ready till half an hour later, alas, for early-risers.

The desk-service was friendly and English-speaking staff were at hand.

It was, by and large, better than expected!

The hotel is located outside the centre but near Wuhan university, that was the reason for my stay. The room is of decent size with lake view but the maintenance condition was not good as wall paper was peeling off and I even found a finger-long insect near the closet. The resatuarant was poor in food quality and choice, but was not cheap. There is a walking street 20 mins walk away which offers a lot of choice for food and some shoppiing opportunities. But free wifi in the public areas and good service made this hotel bearable.

I stayed here with colleagues--all of us staying in suites. All rooms ending in 11 are suites. The room appears well appointed (see photos) but the bed was very hard (think college futon), the heating was erratic, and the shower leaked enormously. These features were true of all my colleague's rooms as well so it wasn't just an anomaly. One person used every towel and bathrobe to mop up the bathroom floor. No separate hair conditioner as part of toiletry set.

The staff did do a second cleaning of my room after we held a meeting in my suite and coffee cups all over.

The buffet breakfast was extensive and while there were only a few western offerings, the chefs would make omelets or scrambled eggs upon request. English language skills of the hotel and restaurant staff were limited but I was traveling with Mandarin-speaking colleagues so I never had to test it too much.

An attempt to get a copy of a lost hotel receipt (not the official government one) has taken weeks and I'm still not sure we have it (my Mandarin-speaking staff member is working on it).

My ranking is reflective of what I would expect from a 4-star hotel.

I stayed here during a visit to one of the local universities. This hotel falls desparetely short of modern standards. There are at least a dozen "proper" international business hotels in Wuhan that you would prefer to stay at. The staff speak very poor English, everything is done very slowly, the breakfast is a misery, and the rooms are pretty shabby. My bathroom had a terrible smell in it, and the room was freezing cold.
In short, if you have a choice and can afford it, go anywhere else.
