Overall, based on our expectations of ibis & the great price, the ibis harbin Sophia met and exceeded them. I would happily stay here again if in Harbin.

It is a basic hotel, not luxury at all, but is clean, cheap and in a top location to explore Harbin.

We arrived early from the train station at 8am, and were given our room key, even though official check in wasn't until the afternoon. That was greatly appreciated and worth a star in itself.

The location is perfect, walking distance to a lot of sites, great restaurants and the Main Street, as well as a shopping centre next door, which has a supermarket on first level.

The rooms are small as expected but comfortable and warm, which was important in January. The bed is very firm, as in a lot of china, which works for some & not others. I prefer soft beds, but did find I still slept well.

There was a tour desk / person who spoke enough English for us to easily organise a tour to ice festival and a taxi to take us to snow island. The tour to ice festival, was the same price as entry ticket, so effectively the bus transport was free! Taxi to snow island was reasonable, driver organised our tickets & we were able to explore at our leisure. As we went on the opening night of ice festival, prior to arriving we were worried about not getting tickets, but it was all incredibly easy at the hotel.

Whilst a lot of negative reviews mention the reception staff and lack of English. We found the staff always to be friendly and helpful, and this was during the busy ice festival. Whilst most don't speak English, generally always one person spoke enough to communicate our needs, through broken English, signing, and for anything obscure google translate helped. However given we were travelling in china, where most tourists are Chinese, and not staying at high end western hotels, we didn't expect the reception staff to be fluent in English, just as we were not fluent in mandarin.

We organised a taxi to airport from reception, which was 150, and as another review mentioned, you are asked for 30 at a toll point, which was offputting. However, we paid 120 balance at airport, so the total was still 150.

Pro: location, price, clean, warm, tour desk, friendly staff (I don't expect all hotel staff to speak English)

Cons : toilet was a little temperamental when flushing & took a few times

Tip: a lot of locals, taxi drivers etc use a translate app on phones to communicate, and using google translate helped us communicate when people didn't speak any English

The room is modern and has everything you need, plus the location is an easy walk from the tourist areas of town. There's a mall next door with a well-stocked supermarket and plenty of restaurants nearby

The downside is the noise from inside the hotel. We can hear people shouting downstairs, running upstairs and simply talking or watching TV in the 3 rooms to either side.

The three cleaners on the floor are particularly noisy - starting from 8am they're shouting up and down the corridor constantly until we left at midday. The previous day they were noisy until 5pm. Some noise, like doors slamming or vacuums, is clearly inevitable, but this is excessive.

Small but functional room in excellent location. Warm room, great shower with lots of hot water. Very good value for money. Rooms themselves are quite soundproof except for corridor noise which can be an issue with Chinese families & tour groups. Staff at reception speak a little English & can organize reliable but expensive taxis. The expense can be worth it though for reliability in the testing winter temperatures. Recommended.

Ibis is located in the center, the rooms are clean (but very small). The staff doesn't speak English at all and doesn't help in any needs. After several trial we have understood that there is nothing to speak with.

its centrally located. no frill hotel. Good taxi service. as in many hotels in China, it helps a lot if you speak Chinese as the staff are not fluent in English. But they try to be helpful even though it is a very busy hotel. It is bigger than what it seems from the facade. Basic amenities. No coffee but mainly Chinese tea. Most important is that it is warm and clean and the bed is firm, Rooms are small but adequate for rest,

Room Tip: higher floors away from lifts
