“Empress Angkor - not a bad option in Siem Reap”
Reviewed 28 February 2012

Empress Angkor hotel was in a good location, not very close to town but relatively quiet. The breakfast is adequate, however, it would appear that it does not cater to Western tastes much, it is mainly Asian and particularly Korean with its style of food.

The politeness of the staff was very good, however, the service at breakfast could have been better, there was a lot of self service including cutlery and coffee and they did not seem interested in helping customers.

The room was a bit bare - not enough places to sit down and a big empty space in the corner, but we had to put some of our luggage in the wardrobe which got a bit awkward at times.

The pool was lovely - and cool after a hot day around the temples. Take no notice of the pool times, it is open to all hours.

All in all, a pretty good stay, don't think you will get a four star hotel - but this is Cambodia, they are a developing country and are doing their best. The people here are lovely and so gracious, they are dying to practice English with you and talk about their lives. Make sure you get out to the local market with a tour guide, on the outskirts of Siem Reap - a fantastic experience. Of course Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm are a must too, but make sure you involve yourself in the culture as well, it is magic.

We stayed in adjoining rooms at the Empress Angkor. The first impression was the spectacular entrance lobby and front garden. The rooms were enormous, timber-lined and well appointed. The only advice is to make sure you have a window or glass doors as one of the rooms was windowless. The second room had a balcony looking on to the pool area. The pool was the perfect temperature and sparkling clean. Service from staff was great with bar attendants bringing over a free cocktail at one point. In-hotel foot massage was fantastic. There is a shuttle bus to town leaving at 6pm and returning at 9pm. It would be great to have some other options for times, but tuk tuks are easy to arrange and fun. HIghly recommend!

Room Tip: Ask for one with a window or glass doors, and one overlooking the pool courtyard.

Beautiful old wood throughout hotel. Excellent location, not too far from main area. Easy to get tuk tuk. Breakfast was lavish, service excellent and the rooms remind me of what "Old Cambodia" luxury looked like. Everything worked well. The hotel bar had very reasonable prices and great ambiance. Pool is nice. Stayed 4 days. Hired Sopanha, a licensed tour guide, recommended by others on Trip Advisor. He was about $25 a day; and he helped us get a Minivan (with driver) for about $30-$40 a day. For 6 people that worked out well. Would highly recommend. Restaurants Grand Cafe, Sugar Palm and all the restaurants in the "alley" downtown. Don't miss Night Market.

Room Tip: Rooms at end of hotel, picked up free wifi from next door hotel. All rooms very nice.

This is actually an awful hotel. I was booked there for three nights while in Siem Reap visiting the temples and moved to another hotel as fast as I could.

I should have known by the rows and rows of suitcases chained up near the front door, like at an airport when flights have been severely screwed up, that this is the sort of hotel that only a tour company who specializes in large tour groups could love.

The staff is new and/or ill trained. The young man escorting me up to my room couldn't find it (I did). And the other young man they sent up to show me how to use the non-functioning in room safe didn't have a clue how to operated the safe let alone determine if it worked or not. The next guys they sent up to try fixing the safe couldn't figure it out either. I left that afternoon with my things locked in my luggage since the safe didn't work.

The hotel pool is a dreary place and the "gym" is weird, like the scene from a bad movie. Breakfast was horrible. And the location is only convenient if you just want to go to the airport or Angkor Wat. There's nothing nearby that you can walk to. While tuk-tuk's are cheap, the location is a drag, the huge crowds coming through in massive waves, and the terribly ill trained staff make this a hotel that any intrepid or worldly traveler would want to avoid. Huge tour groups who likely aren't paying much seem to be their forte.

Made this selection after much reviewing of the large selection of hotels in this area. Beautiful lobby, absolutely spotless. The service is wonderful. Breakfast was large buffet, included in the price and had lots of choices. Great happy hour and dinner for excellent. great bang for your buck!
