It was the peak of the hot, wet season when we stayed and far too hot to do the slog into town by foot. The taxis all seemed to charge only $! for a one way trip. If I visit Siem Reap again I will stayer nearer to the town centre.
The hotel itself was comfortable. We liked the fact that there was a powerful fan as well as the option of room aircon. One thing I can never understand about hotels in Cambodia and Laos is the lack of insect screening on the windows and doors. We would have much preferred to switch off the air con and just have the strong fan blowing on us with all doors & windows open. Impossible due to the biting insects with unscreened windows.
The bed was very comfortable and our upstairs room was relatively private. The chairs on the balcony were real back breakers, but the fan outdoors was a nice touch. There was plenty of space in our room but not enough places to stow our luggage which ended up on the floor.
The bathroom was spacious too, but, like some other reviewers, the toilet quickly became blocked. I would suggest that the management puts up a sign in all rooms to request that toilet paper is not put in the toilet, but placed in the bin provided.
We loved the pool - on the small side, but then this is not a resort hotel. The sunbeds and shady huts were just lovely. We always found the pool very clean. the gardens and lawns were superb.
The breakfast was good but we would have liked a little more variety for the evening and lunchtime meals. Food was always well done, tasty and nicely presented.
Mr Hak was wonderful in arranging a guide for three days of temple visits. In fact Mr Hak was wonderful full stop. He is a great fount of information and a lovely, smiling man.
Laundry service arranged by the hotel is of a good standard and is cheap.
I would recommend Sonalong as a good, clean, safe option for accommodation. It is not a resort type hotel, but a comfortable, locally run establishment.

Room Tip: I think an upstairs room would be best - more privacy.

Sonalong is close enough to the main restaurant / bar area, yet far enough away to avoid the noise and crazieness of the main area.

The grounds and pool area is excellent, and the water temperature perfect for cooling off after a day of temple viewing. The rooms are basic but as we had a full day at the temples and half a day at the resort, they were perfect for what we needed.

The staff were friendly assisting with drivers etc.

Would recommend.

The rooms at Sonalong are very nice, great size. The bathroom was not the best as we had a problem with a blocked toilet and every time someone would shower the whole bathroom would be flooded. It was in a very convenient location, out of the way from all of the noise of pub street etc but still within walking distance of the local markets etc, about ten minutes. The pool was very nice. Biggest let down over all was definitely the breakfast, it was very very basic and even then did not taste good. Also, small point, there are no phones in the room. We had a tour guide for a couple of days who we needed to get in touch with, we asked to use a phone at reception and were told we would need to go into town to use one there...

Good location in a lovely setting with a great pool and surround...a lovely oasis from Temple visiting...we walked into the area where all the restaurants, night markets and bars which took about 20 minutes...
The rooms were tired and the bathrooms basic but were clean and had all mod cons you might need...
Breakfast was basic and we ate in the evening when we first arrived which was not great...in fact the restaurant seemed grubby and in need of a good clean...
The staff were really friendly and helpful and provided maps and information to make the most of your stay in the area..they also arranged transport for us with a guide around the temples at a good rate...
All in all it was a good base for exploring the area but plan to eat out..

Great pool and outside area to relax in. Rooms big and well appointed, breakfast very basic. Had problem with water pressure in shower but nothing serious. Owner / manager pleasant and attentive.I think what makes this place so popular is that its good value for people that come and stay here for long periods.

Room Tip: Choose ground floor rooms leading onto garden
