Golden Sands 3 was an ideal base for me and this was my second visit and I had the same room as last year! The room is an apartment with lounge area, well equipped kitchen with fridge and washer, comfortable bed. The room was very clean, pleasantly decorated. There is not much view from the window as this building is in the midst of hotel blocks. The stafff were all very pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was buffet style and a fairly good selection. After a busy day sightseeing, I was pleased to have my dinner in the hotel restaurant. There is a choice of buffet, or a la carte, and I chose the latter. The food was hot and well cooked. Outside, all these buildings just look like a concrete jungle, but it is only 10 minute walk to the nearest shopping centre, which also has the metro station, and is also a main stop for the Big Bus - hop on/off. A 2 day ticket is good value for money. There are 2 routes - the city or the beaches, and a trip on a dhow and entry to 2 museums are also included.
I use Dubai as a good stop over place between England and Australia and if I go to Australia again next year, I would certainly stay here again.

Spent 3 days in a studio room in block 3. Location is ok not far from a big supermarket (Spinneys, open 24hrs) & metro station (very clean & since it is over ground you can actually have a great view of the city while travelling). Staff was just ok, sometimes a bit overbearing: as soon as you stepped foot outside the hotel they kept asking you if you needed help even if you were perfectly fine, but when you actually needed their help it was a different story: I had to call a few times for different things broken in our room and never got fixed! The room itself was just ok, not luxurious but not bad either, the 2 major problems were the bathroom being very old& very dirty (it should be changed completely) and the fact that cleanliness was not their major strength.
Reading through the reviews on this site I understood that the cheapest taxi were the yellow ones so I was looking for them, the way it works is that all taxi are creamy colour, the only difference is the roof, the yellow taxi are the national ones. If you catch a taxi from the airport the price starts from 20aed, while if you stop it on the street it’s only 4. So we paid 50aed from the airport to the hotel and only 23 from the hotel to the airport. During the day both subway & buses are very convenient, cheap and clean so after buying a metro card (which you can use both on trains & buses) we used it for our entire stay.
I would stay in this hotel again only if the price was very cheap.

On first looks this hotel seems a bit basic and tired. However, the service is friendly and the daily cleaning service was impeccable. There were plenty of taxis to be found to hail outside (all with meters) or the nearest metro station was only 5 minutes away and super clean.

The location opposite the Spinney's supermarket mall was a real bonus and the foreign exchange shop there had much better than than the hotel.

We didn't know we could have gone to the other Golden Sands buildings to use their pool. Would have been handy to know as the one at GS10 was in shadows most of the time.

I stayed at this hotel/apartment in May 2011. Staff were helpful and courteous. Kitchenette was stocked with all you need for basic cooking requirements. The apartment was serviced daily to a high standard of cleanliness.
I stayed in Golden sands 5 with a roof top pool. The pool area was really quiet.
The Golden Sands is set across many streets in blocks of 10 in total. Make sure you know which number you are booked into. Some blocks don't have a pool so I would recommend number 5 as this has a roof top pool.
There is a Spinney supermarket located on both main roads to east and west of the block. Everything is available except alcohol. If you are a Brit who can't live without your bacon this is also available at Spinney.

Room Tip: Golden sands 5 has a rooftop pool if you don't want a long walk to a neighbouring building.
