We had a romantic dinner here on the last night of our stay in LP and it turned out to be the perfect location! Beautiful setting and atmosphere. You sit right by the lotus pond. Food and drinks were lovely, the staff very attentive. Of course you can get cheaper meals in LP but this restaurant is really special and more upscale. There is a secluded table in the middle of the pond, which you can reserve for a very private dining experience.
As far as food goes, I had the vegetarian stew and one other home made ice teas and really loved it.

The grilled fish with salt and lemongrass is a must-try (around 120,000 kip). It was so memorable - succulent, tasty and fragrant. It was the highlight of our dinner. Amazing scenery.

Only downside were the mosquitoes.

As you walk down the non-descript road that takes you to Manda de Laos, you are unprepared for what lies ahead. A small wooden gang plank greets you, flanked by subtle but suitable lighting.

As you enter the restaurant proper, the real charm of the place unfolds before you. A giant, and I mean enormous, lily pond covering more than half of the property's entire footprint is covered in flowers and beautifully lit and stretches out into the darkness, casting mysterious shadows in all directions. A pretty boardwalk traverses the entire pond and cries out to be walked on either before dinner to build up an appetite or afterwards to aid with digestion.

Our table was nestled right next to the water. There is no fence so be careful as you move your chair. The drinks list was extensive, including Lao Lao whisky which, as a whisky fan, seemed too good to miss. It's very pale, almost clear, but certainly packs a punch and, while not your traditional single malt, it's definitely worth a try. It's a third of the price of the Scottish equivalent too.

The food is a charming mix of Lao and western cuisine and makes a pleasant change from the standard Lao food you see in most places here in Luang Prabang. The ribs and duck were particularly good. As in most parts of South East Asia, choosing wine is a challenge. Even at an up-market place like this, the range is shall we say unusual and the prices make Dan Murphy look even more attractive. That said, when dining special surroundings, you sometimes have to say who cares and lash out with a nice glass of wine or two.

The staff were absolutely charming, though in some cases the English is a little challenging. Still, they make a real effort and always try so hard to please, usually with a smile, even if occasionally they seem a little over eager to clear the table.

By Laos standards, Manda de Laos is certainly not cheap. That said, my wife and I had a wonderful night in a really special place for only $110, including drinks, which in Melbourne would barely buy you two courses in a very ordinary pasta bar.

If you've come this far, it seems like a no-brainer for a special dinner with someone special.

We went for lunch and ordered the set of 400,000 Kip per person. The lunch set for 2 ( total of 800,000 kip) was quite impressed. It was enough for 2-3 adults. We loved the food and the restaurant ambience.
