Hive has a pretty garden area where this fashion show takes place. The show is free and you're going to buy drinks somewhere anyhow, so why not? Impressive quantity of traditional clothing on show, a good pairing for a visit to the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre or even just the night market. After the fashion show some b-boys perform, which is always fun to watch. Make sure you check it out!

I have been to Luang Prabang two years in a row and went to the Ethnik Fashion Show both times. And I will go again next time I am in town. It is a great fusion of traditional, authentic clothing with modern music and a simple but creative set. The break dancing at the end is exciting, too. The fashion show was not only entertaining, but I felt that it deepened my appreciation of the clothing and textiles that I saw throughout my travels.

There is no charge for the show, but since it is at a bar/restaurant, one should order from the menu, and there is a tip box for the performers. Great evening.

like a fasion show the models are quick and efficient. They change their costumes quickly and demonstrate all kinds of costumes, which look iona way "westernized", yet maintaining folklore patterns of textile, colors and head covers. the music that accompanies the show is very american and modern, and does not fit the "ethnik" show. A classical American tourist trap. No admition fee but you have to order something to eat and/or drink.

I take from your comments that you did not read the information brochure about the ETHNIK show while you were watching it. Nor does it appear that you are familiar with traditional Laos garments. All the garments presented at the ETHNIK show are 100% traditional garments that you would see in remote Laos villages and special events like the Hmong Festival. Our collection of garments is of higher quality and in greater number than you will find at the Laos National Museum. The collection is so special in fact, that the Laos Department of Culture has awarded the ETHNIK show a special cultural designation this year. Before calling into question the authenticity of our cultural show it might have been best for you to education yourself a bit on the topic. We rarely get comments like yours and literally all our customers are unanimous in their praise of the show. We do play modern music to accompany the show - we are a bar and restaurant after all - that is frequented by young tourists. We use the music and professional fashion show theme to give a modern twist to old Laos traditional. It helps to keep the audience interested and in an up beat mood. As you mentioned the show is completely free to our customers - and we never turn away anyone unless we are full - even if they just order a bottle of water. Customers sales are used to support over 20 student models pay for their education and living expenses while they are away from their villages. The student also very much appreciate tips from our customers. To say that a FREE, Laos government certified cultural show, that supports local student education, is an "American tourist trap" is offensive and you should be ashamed of yourself for saying so.

The clothes these models wear are the real thing from all over the country. Different ethnic groups like Hmong and Khamu etc.
The dance at the end of the show was a little cheesy with a glitch in the music system that left the girls looking awkward and confused.

Thanks for your positive review of our ETHNIK Show. We are very proud to show our customers all the different types of ethnic garments that are found through out Laos. It really is a wonderful collection and even better than what you see in the National Museum.

Regarding the "cheesy" dance at the end. This is actually traditional modern Lao dancing. It is the type of dancing that you would see if you attended a Lao wedding, birthday or other celebration.

We recently added this dance to the show at the suggestion of the Lao students, who support their studies by, modelling for us. They are proud of their traditions and wanted to share it with our foreign visitors.

Absolutely loved the show, but also the bar and people. Good service and the bar owner, Troy, was super friendly. Felt welcomed as soon as we walked in the door. Food was western style (didn't feel like there were many local Lao options on the menu) but the drinks were great abs unique and the prices were good. Go for the show!
