Le Palais Juliana is a truly beautiful hotel. The grounds are the biggest plus of the place no question.

The pool has a mountain backdrop, the grounds are unbelievably green and make you feel like you are in the midst of the jungle vs the edge of town...

Staff were very friendly and so eager to help. English proved to be a bit of a challenge, but we got there in the end (my Laos being non existent).

Location wise - could be seen as a plus or minus. Yes it's a little out of the action but that means you can just relax and enjoy the surroundings but if you want to walk out the front door into the attractions probably not the right choice.

Food was pretty good, room had a modern bathroom which was unexpected - looked like a recent addition. Room itself was clean, comfortable and had a great view out over the pool and beyond.

The hotel is very open air - which means mosquitoes by night so be warned and the gym is also open to the outside world meaning workouts are extra sweaty.

Overall, a very pleasant place to relax.

Our stay was for 5 nights. First night we were woken from our sleep by a loud noise coming from the plumbing. It was dealt with quickly and the next day we were moved from our room to a Villa! The villa was huge and quite. The staff went out of their way to make you feel welcome and attended to any request quickly. The only negative is that it is away from the main town ( not within walking or bike ride) so always needed to hire Tuk Tuk (van) to take us there.

The rooms are extremely spacious. Truly enjoyed the balcony where we enjoyed the quietness and relaxed with a drink. The bathrooms are large also. The pool is very relaxing and beautiful. There are message huts where one can receive a fantastic message. The food in the restaurant was very good. If you are traveling to Luang Prabang, I highly recommend this hotel.

We spent several days at the glorious Le Palais Juliana in Luang Prabang, Laos in January, 2016, while on a tour of SE Asia. Le Palais Juliana was by far the best of all the grand hotels we stayed at on this trip and one of the most charming we have ever stayed at worldwide.

Well located, Le Palais Juliana has everything that you might want in a traditional grand colonial hotel including acres of teak flooring, very high ceilings, beautiful soundproofed rooms, and excellent amenities. The hotel boasts a spectacular and huge outdoor pool and hot tub with nearby seating and bar, charming cabins with mosquito netting over the beds, and beautiful furniture and well decorated public spaces throughout. Everything is spotless. The public spaces are large, pavilion like, full of teak/ bamboo, and very attractive. There is even a small and charming Library that visitors may use.

Room amenities include coffee pots, stationary, designer toiletries, outside balconies with handsome teak furniture, good reading lamps and lighting (the rarest of all amenities), a safe, a closet with enough hangers, lovely silk cushions and throws, a huge bed with silk bedboard, large and lovely bathrooms with an excellent shower and lights, and lots of little extras.

The restaurant is excellent with banquet, buffet, individual dining, and handsome deck dining capabilities. The food is varied, excellent, and open long hours. We found the staff to be very accommodating, efficient, thoughtful, and welcoming.

The grounds of this hotel are worth a special mention, as you appear to be in the middle of a glorious jungle clearing with streams, tall trees, and lots of wildlife. We saw a monitor lizard devour a turtle right off the walkway as we returned to our room one day.

This is the sort of hotel and the sort of city you would like to spend six months settling into. The area is charming, the city is fascinating and compelling, and the hotel is totally comfortable. We felt like we were settling into a 1940s Hollywood movie set about SE Asia. Very enjoyable.

One Caveat: While we were there, the climate changed from 95 Fahrenheit to 40 degrees F in one day. This hotel does not appear to have heating, so be prepared. We were there in January and were quite comfortable without heating while we were there. Friends who stayed on longer said they found their last day in the hotel a little too brisk for comfort, when the temperature dropped and held to unusually cold temperatures. Most of the time, this will not be even a remote possibility, but bring layers.
