“An incredible Aman...”
Reviewed 9 March 2012

To be honest, after reading some average feedbacks on TP regarding Amantaka, we were really worried and almost wanted to change our plans... Fortunately we haven't cause our recent experience at Amantaka has been one of the most memorable we have been lucky to experience. Sincerely if somebody has something to complain about this amazingly managed property, i'm afraid nothing can make him or her happy or satisfied.

From the beginning until the very end of our stay, everything has exceeded all our expectations. The dream has started right away we left the plane where 3 members of the staff where waiting for us on the tarmac to help us with the immigration and visa on arrival. We just gave all the documents required and visa fee and we have been waiting for 10 minutes only on the VIP room of the small LPQ airport. After this short time, we have been escorted to the car where the baggages were already loaded... Such a luxury not to have to deal with the immigration officer and wait at the baggage claim... So Aman...

Now, let's talk about Amantaka. After a short car drive with all the Aman details (cold towels, car snacks and thousand of smiles), we arrived in front of Amantaka where Gary, the GM, was waiting for us. A perfect welcome by the Amantaka family drove us directly to the Nirvana. A short introduction with all the facilities of this property, a delicious Tamarind Iced tea shared with the GM and it was time to discover our suite... sorry our "home" in Luang Prabang.

We stayed in the huge and massive Amantaka suite 25 with a breathtaking high ceiling. An independent suite in the middle of this old hospital incredibly restored and beautifully designed. Amantaka is full of character and the atmosphere you'll feel is really special. Wherever you'll look, you'll be impressed. Our suite was divided between several spaces: a relaxing living room with day beds where it's so great to read a book; the fantastic bedroom with a four poster bed and on each side an other room (bathtub and make up room on a side and desk area on the other side); a very practical and very large dressing room and on the back the bathroom area with a double shower and for sure two sinks. On the back of this marvelous space is the outside space with a sala with two huge day beds, a charming garden and an excellent pool. No worries, you'll feel quickly like at home and you'll find all the littlest details making of your stay something incredible and only Aman provides.

We're Amanjunkies and have been in several Amanresorts and we can quote this one as one of the most unique. You'll even find the most terrific spa where we had an unforgettable massage. There is even a water pavilion with steam, sauna and a very big jacuzzi you can privatize after treatment and there is even a state-of-the-art fitness center. So this Aman property has all the benefits of what Aman has to offer around the world but with some extras we haven't seen before.

But Amantaka wouldn't be sooooo fabulous without the team managed by the excellent Gary. The Amantaka family is really nice, efficient and always ready to make your time with them so special. They have an eye on everything and will always provide you their best with heart and Laotian people are really really kind and nice, discreet and respectful. Can't even imagine why some people complained cause we received the highest level of service and it has exceeded all our expectations.

Food is remarkable and with reasonable prices. We had a delicious lunch before leaving and the afternoon tea with yummy cakes and great iced teas is a moment not to be missed just like some of the excursions tailored by Amanwhich have not to be missed: we tried a Sunset Cruise on the Mekong and it's a moment we'll remember for lifetime.

We were extremely sad to leave and when we saw about 20 girls and guys of the Amantaka family plus Gary coming to say bye, it was full of emotion confirming Amantaka has changed our life for ever as much as our discover of the incredible town of Luang Prabang. Don't hesitate, Amantaka is one of the best hotel in the world and one of the well managed and you'll hardly leave.

Room Tip: The Amantaka Suite 25 is a fabulous choice but i'm fan as well of the layout of the Mekong Suite...

We have stayed in many Amans and travel a lot but this is the second worst after Tahiti. The Aman experience can be ethereal but can sometimes miss the boat. Its all relative of course. We wonder whether the financial background is being translated into a certain slackness or whether it is an individual management issue. The property initially beckons as a siren onto the rocks of good hospitality but this is shortlived. The room we had was huge (pool villa btw at $1800 a night) but seemed not to reflect the local Lao life as some Amans do. The service seemed to result from a lack of training and consistent supervision although of course all the individuals were lovely and I dont want to criticise them. It just did not have the small things which blow you away at some Amans. In particular having to pay for breakfast (mean... when it is included everwhere in Asia). Minibar not properly stocked-we love our gin and tonics close at hand. Wifi not working (had to log onto neighbor). In other Amans service is seamless and invisible but this was on par with other good but not exceptional hotels. It is also intrusive having the Manger aproach in the middle of dinner. Please wait for a break in serving! Attention to guests needs are not anticipated as at most Amans. We feel spoilt little brats complaining about these things but if you set up charges of this price you must be sure you have it right. Sadly this Aman misses. Tomorrow is another day. BTW dont miss the photography trip to the village

Worth a visit, true value for money, the Pool Villas are worth it. Try chartering their river boat with a butler for a sunset cruise. Some dining room waiters may need some additional training on western expectations of speed. The airport VIP service is worth every penny.

We stayed at Amantaka for 2 nights and a Lao-owned guesthouse, Villa Chitadara II, for 2 nights. Frankly we preferred the guesthouse -- it was a warmer, more local, more interesting experience, with chattier Lao staff, cosier room and river view, not to mention the far lower rate ($50/night)!

Of course the Aman property was extremely spacious & aesthetically pleasing, with beautifully minimalist decor and perfectly coordinated furnishings, but felt rather impersonal & somewhat sterile - perhaps because it was converted from a hospital! Our suite was so vast it required a lot of strolling around (especially to switch off all the lights as there seemed to be no master switch near the bed.) You could sub-let part of it to help pay the room rate! The grounds are large and dimly lit at night; it can be a trek to the lobby/restaurant if you're elderly.

The service was fine but no faster or friendlier than at the guesthouse. The breakfasts offered greater choice but tasted no better, and it was much more enjoyable eating on the guesthouse's riverside terrace overlooking the Mekong than in the hotel's walled compound. We felt less detached from the local life in the guesthouse, better able to interact comfortably with the Laotian staff & owner and to observe street & river activities. In some places, the luxury cocoon of a 5-star hotel is welcome relief at the end of the day, but Luang Prabang was not one of those places for us.
