“Large, modern apartment in an older building within walking distance of historic area”
Reviewed 17 October 2016 for a stay in September 2016

When we plugged the address into our GPS, it ended up taking us to the same number/street in a town about 45 minutes away, and when we finally arrived we had no idea where to park because we weren’t familiar with the local customs. Everybody parks on the sidewalks rather than parallel parking on the street. When we pulled in, we were greeted by an angry stranger yelling at us for parallel parking. The hostess was there and apologized for him, explaining that we should just pull up on the sidewalk like everyone else. We were a little weary because the building looked rough from the outside, but were very happy once we got into the apartment.

The apartment itself is very large, bright, and upgraded. There is a decently sized kitchen with stove, oven, and refrigerator, a large dining table that fit our full group of 6 adults, a nice living room with a comfortable couch, TV, and strong wifi, 3 bedrooms (2 are large and have big beds while the one off of the living room is rather small and has a dresser, cabinet, and smaller double bed- the beds are pretty basic and run on the stiff side, but nobody had any issues falling asleep after a long day of walking around), and 1.5 bathrooms. We felt a little uneasy walking around the area directly surrounding the apartment, especially at night, but it was only a 5-10 minute walk to the water and bridge to the historic area of the city.

Positives: The apartment was really spacious, so our group of 6 adults was able to spread out. There were balconies for every room, and a shared balcony off the living room (none of them had good views, but it was nice to be able to get some fresh air). The hostess was very nice and helpful. She had maps and gave us a few tips for how to get around. The wifi was reliable and the living room was very comfortable to relax in at night. There was a bakery right downstairs where you could get fresh baked goods for breakfast every morning that had really delicious baked goods at great prices. As I mentioned before, it was only a 5-10 minute walk to the historic part of the city, so you didn’t have to drive around much, which was a huge plus for us.

Negatives: The listing says 2 bathrooms, but there are 1.5 bathrooms. I have to agree with the other review about the shower. The full bathroom has a small shower, when there is definitely room for a larger one, and the towels leave something to be desired. They are very thin and very stiff and scratchy. Some new, larger and fuller towels would be a huge plus. Some of the people in our group were a little uncomfortable with the toilet in the full bathroom, which is directly against the radiator. If you had the heat on, there is no way you’d be able to use the toilet without burning your arm/side. The half bath is a toilet, cabinet, and the smallest sink we’ve ever seen. The water pressure is really strong, and the sink is tiny, so when you turn on the faucet it’s really easy to make a mess. Though it was great that there was a coffee pot in the kitchen, it took over an hour to make 1 pot of coffee, which was very frustrating with 6 coffee drinking adults. Also, though it was really nice to have a kitchen, it was hard to fully utilize it because there was a weird hodgepodge of pans and utensils. There was a small frying pan and a medium one, both nonstick, but no spatulas or anything to use with them, so we ended up using a wooden spoon. Lastly, the refrigerator was broken, so all of our food spoiled. I will say that the owner was really fast to respond and had a repairman out there the next day, but he didn’t actually fix it, so that wasn’t her fault. These things happen, but it was still unfortunate.

Overall, this was a nice apartment. It wasn’t the best area, and you can’t really see the marina, but it was within walking distance of where we wanted to go, and it was really spacious and nicely upgraded. There are definitely some things they could change including new towels and mattress pads, extra pillows, etc for the bedrooms, and maybe specific directions for how to get there since GPS can get confused, but overall it was nice. It wasn’t perfect, but it fit our needs and we enjoyed our stay.

“Comfortable, spacious and nicely appointed, very close to the center of town”
Reviewed 13 September 2016 for a stay in September 2016

The apartment is conveniently located in the central part of town next to the marina, but a 10 minute walk to the bridge to the old town (there is a closer crossing to the old town by rowboat however). The building is somewhat dingy and tired-looking on the outside, but inside the 2nd floor apartment (up one flight of stairs or by lift) is nicely decorated, has been updated and modernized. It is quite spacious, including 3 bedrooms and 3 balconies, but with no real views to speak (street view on one side, and in the back overlooks a lane with a playground area adjacent). Sill, the balconies can be used to sit and enjoy the pleasant nighttime temperatures.
The lining room and kitchen offer ample seating for 6, and there is a large screen TV and wifi. The bedrooms are small but acceptable, with ample built-in closets. The beds are not that comfortable, basic mattresses and bedding that could use upgrading to reflect the other refinements in the apartment. This alone would raise the level of comfort, especially since you are most likely to be in the apartment to sleep. The other item that could use improvement are the bathrooms. One is a fairly large bathroom that has a small shower stall. A larger shower is always a welcome feature, and it seems that this bathroom could accommodate one. The bathroom also has the washer, which is very nice. The other bathroom is adjacent, opening to the hallway, but is it only a small powder room, with cold water only (as far as we could tell). This wasn't adequately explained in the description, as far as I am concerned. Again, updating this bathroom would be in order to raise the level of comfort of this nice apartment. Fresher towels and linens are also expected in this type of apartment, in my view. These are the things that make one property stand out from others. Lastly, more hooks are needed, in the bathrooms or in the bedrooms. If the apartment can accommodate up to six, then there has to be ample place to especially hang towels for each person. I find this the most common problem in the apartments that I've rented in Europe, but it is such a simple thing to do! Lastly, parking was easy, it's available on the street right outside the apartment, but no assigned spaces The owner was very helpful and was able to promptly meet us to show us in and explain everything we needed to know. To recap, a great apartment that has potential to be exceptional with some upgrading, or at least very good with some new towels, hooks, and bed linens.
