“Hidden paradise near Dubrovnik”
Reviewed 10 February 2018 for a stay in May 2017

Three years ago my wife and I were invited to a wedding in Dubrovnik, in early September, and we decided to spend a few extra days with friends, somewhere "in the vicinities, possibly in a quiet, shaded place". We were lucky to find just what we were looking for. A house tucked behind old walls, barely visible from the outside, hidden by clusters of oaks, walnuts and bay trees, and yet in the very middle of a small, sleepy village. It turned out to be a blissful vacation: we have spent some lazy, warm days grilling fish on the stone-built barbecue, and cooking meat “under the iron bell” as the locals do. Apart from enjoying the pool we also went swimming to a nearby beach hidden at the bottom of reddish cliffs (check Pasjaca beach on Google). A marvellous immersion into the primeval blue.

Last year we returned to the same property for a Spring break in mid May. At this time of year it seemed a different place: the air was fragrant with a multitude of blossoms : from sweet wisteria to pungent Pittosporums to inebriating tangy scent of orange trees in bloom. Energized by the perfumed air, instead of lounging around the garden and the pool, we explored the countryside on horse!! (there is well run horse farm in the village), we visited wine cellars in the area, climbed up to the Eagle Tower, (Soko Kula, an impressive piece of architectural heritage) and enjoyed two afternoon visits to Dubrovnik (less crowded than in the morning), completing the enjoyment with a delightful concert in the old town. Having so enthusiastically described the outdoors, it should be underlined that the house itself is very lovely, comfortable and with a lot of character, clean and extremely well equipped with every type of household item. The owners are very helpful, generous and most attentive to guests' needs.

PS: If asked which of the two periods we liked better, we would have difficulty in giving a straight answer. Each period has its own delicious features, but the one big difference is that, in May, the days last longer.

Dear Ferrante,
Thank you for your poetic words describing your two stays at the Lucivana, You are quite right: it is difficult to compare the two experiences. During "the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness" when the sun is penetrating your bones, but is not scorching anymore, the enjoyment of our outdoor spaces has an almost hedonistic flavour (although in late September it starts smelling of autumn), while the merry month of May vibrates with the promise of a long summer in front of you and invites you to be more active and to explore. Take a friendly hint: June is the month with the longest days.... We will always be happy to welcome you and your friends.
Sincerely, Lucy

“Hidden Paradise is a wonderful experience!”
Reviewed 14 January 2018 for a stay in September 2017

Last September we have spent a week in this great property, in a beautiful area close to Dubrovnik. When we arrived there, met by Linda, the owner's pretty young niece, we had the impression that a happily living family had just left their home to let us occupy it and enjoy it. A true home it is, with two fully equipped kitchens, of which one is at the garden level, a number of comfortable outdoor spaces in which to dine, lounge or relax, and charmigly appointed cozy interiors. An absolutely ideal place for a group of friends who like doing things together, but who also each like having some time in peace, on their own.

We arrived rather early in the day, left our luggage at the house and went to nearby Cavtat for lunch and a gorgeous swim, while the house was being prepared for us. Cavtat is a pretty seaside resort with good hotels and some excellent restaurants, beaches, shops etc. We returned there twice more to dine and to take the boat shuttle across the bay to Dubrovnik, which is the most leisurely way of reaching the very centre of the famous old town, otherwise frightfully jammed by tourists.

We have had a mighty storm one day, which cooled down the air to a degree that offered ideal conditions for walking through the nearby countryside, which offers some amazing views and panoramas. When we were not discovering the area on foot or by car, we would spend our time lazing by the pool, enjoying the views of the cypress clad hills in the distance and making barbecues. What a wonderful experience. Highly recommended!

Dear Lana, I was genuinely touched by your remark " we had the impression that a happily living family had just left their home to let us occupy it and enjoy it". As a matter of fact, you have recognised the main characteristic of our house, i.e. the fact that it was left more or less in the same shape in which it was lived in by our family. I have opted for this choice inspired by a stay in a National Trust property in England, in which everything has been left in the same place in which its former owners had left them. Of course, our old family summer place has absolutely nothing in common with a National Trust property, outside the fact that we have copied the venerable British institution and have chosen to preserve some traces of the past lives in the house, hoping that our guests might find it appealing. I'm pleased to say that some of them have, indeed, returned for a second stay. With kindest regards to you and your Family, Lucy

“Lovely area and property; charming hostess - but 'Paradise Lost' because of various problems.”
Reviewed 21 October 2017 for a stay in September 2017

Beautiful area and attractive house with much to commend it. Easy to get to Dubrovnik from Cavtat which is itself a delightful little town. Also easy to visit Montenegro, Dubrovnik's Islands etc. There are some nice swimming beaches nearby including the one close to the house, situated down a perilous little cliff path. We did some good snorkelling in the clear waters.
The house is well equipped, although it was pretty low on mugs, glasses and sun loungers by the time of our stay, which was end of season. The house needs more fire extinguishers and needs fire blankets in the kitchens. The house is kept clean and the cleaning lady makes nice little cakes! Clean sheets and towels are supplied frequently.
The owner is friendly and speaks good English. She has a lovely sense of humour.
We would have appreciated a few board and card games for the evenings.
There were some attractive flowers around the house and a gorgeous old fig tree full of figs. There are also pomegranates and thriving herbs.
For shopping the small local supermarket nearby is quite sufficient. There is also a small market in Cavtat. There are restaurants in Cavtat and nearby which are of an excellent standard.
On arrival there were very few lights in the guest wing operational but this problem was efficiently fixed. The lights at the entrance were also mended during our stay. Several of the lights in the kitchen are broken and although new bulbs were put in these and they worked we doubt if they are really safe. There are few sockets in the kitchen. Curiously one of these is situated directly above the sink. Underneath the sink is an extension lead with sockets - once again not a good spot for electrics!
The shower at the top of the house is virtually impossible to use because the water runs into an unsealed dip at the back of the tiles. The middle floor bathroom was slow to run away.
The roof of the guest wing had numerous creatures in it which kept us awake at night - this was not very pleasant. One of our guests also heard creatures in the roof of the main house. These could be squirrels, mice or rats.
On three nights we were disturbed by horrendously loud 'music' from directly next door, where there is a derelict building/sports area. One night this startling 'techno rave' type noise went on until 5 o'clock in the morning making sleep impossible. This is not the fault of the owner who was most upset to hear about it. However, it is an issue which needs addressing for the future.
The pool was nice but in spite of the owner's efforts it was not really warm enough. The pool steps are slippery and dangerous.
In spite of some difficulties we did enjoy our stay- it is a lovely old house and a beautiful location - but have to say that I could not recommend the property as it currently stands to a friend unless these problems are cured. If they are addressed it will be a thoroughly delightful destination and I would then have no hesitation in recommending it.

Dear Rosemary,
Thank you very much for the kind words you have written about our house (and about its owner). But what a distress it was to read your comments on your own experience at the Lucivana last September. As it happens, yours is the very first review the house has ever received containing complaints.

First of all I am deeply sorry that "Hidden Paradise" (*) has failed you as it has. I feel completely crest-fallen over your own disappointment, and badly let down myself, because Lucivana's image has now been stained by problems which were out of our power to redress during your stay.

I would now like to update you on the situation at the house:
- The noise in the roof
A number of different persons,( in the know on the matter) have reached the consensus that the offender was the doormouse. How come its presence had not been registered ever before? The possible reason may be the total absence of rain for 97 days last summer, followed by a belated manifestation of the equinox (shortly before your arrival), which might have alerted these creatures to search winter shelter as soon as walnuts started to shed their coats.
What have we done about it:
we have waited until the kiwis have lost their foliage and searched for cracks in the roof area that may offer entrance possibilities. Appropriate chemical deterrents have been distributed in that space and under the roof of the main house.

- The fire department
Allow me to mention that the fire fighting equipment we have on the premises responds to the official Ministry of Tourism requirements. However, having now heard of the existence of "fire blankets" I can confirm that I have acquired two such covers (courtesy of my friends in England), one for each kitchen.

- The wiring
I appreciate your surveyor's eye and take your point about the position of sockets. The original arrangement of furniture in the downstairs kitchen (which your comments refer to) has been changed. The 70-cm thick stone walls covered with plasterboard represent a problem for re-wiring, hence the use of extensions.

- Miscellanea
The supplies of mugs and glasses have been added to.
Thank you for mentioning playing cards. Point taken. Cards and some games have been added to the inventory.

Regarding the worst of your woes, the rave-party noise, which had kept you awake for several nights, apparently was produced by a series of farewell to bachelorhood celebrations. I have complained to "the authorities" about it, I was told it should not happen again. I will hope that that promise holds.

For the reader possibly interested in the house, please note the good comments I have copied from this review:

“Amazing.”
Reviewed 19 October 2017 for a stay in July 2017

We loved Lucivana from the moment we pulled up to the gate and Linda met us. Our group of 4 adults and 3 children stayed a week. We all agreed that the beds were the most comfortable we had ever experienced in any hotel or holiday rental. The house and annex met all our needs - stylishly decorated, comfortable, well equipped kitchen and laundry. It’s quiet, private, peaceful… and the pool is just waiting any time you need it. We also made the most of the outdoor grill and dining table under the arbour. Be sure to walk a few minutes up the road to discover the Klaic winery early in your stay. And assuming you’ve got a rental car, because there’s not a lot do do around Popovici, don’t miss the Sokol Grad fort.

“Fantastic!”
Reviewed 9 August 2017 for a stay in July 2017

We visited this beautiful house with friends for one week in July and had a wonderful time. It’s a great place to stay at and relax, in a lovely area near the coast. Ideal for two families. It is very well equipped and designed for outdoor living with a fantastic view, beautiful covered terrace, lots of seating areas and a pool. It is also handy for visiting Cavtat and Dubrovnik, where there are lots of shops and restaurants.

There is a lovely beach a short walk from the house and, although it is down a steep path, it is definitely worth the effort!

The owner was extremely friendly and helpful, with lots of information and advice from the initial booking to the end of our stay.

This is one of the best houses we have stayed in and we would definitely recommend it.

Dear Mad202017, Thank you very much for your kind words of praise. Having travelled quite a bit myself, I aim to offer details that I would expect to find in a rented place, other than cleanliness and basic comforts. And whenever my guests show a specific interest in the destination (such as your plan to cruise around the islands) I feel motivated to offer the best assistance and advice possible.
