Owner description: The ruins of the Roman Emperor Diocletian's palace date back to the late 3rd to early 4th century A.D.
Reviewed 13 April 2018

As the centrepiece and origin of the ancient city, the remains of the Roman palace are stunning and must be seen. I knew very little about Split before my visit, but I will certainly return. For such a precious survivor of seven centuries, the palace is surprisingly accessible, and great for an early morning or late evening visit to avoid the crowds. Popularity seems to have increased since the fantastic vaulted cellars were used a set on Game of Thrones.

What a sight! The palace provides centuries of historical life in Split, from the original palace structure as its evolved as a medieval town right up to today as it functions as a lively, vibrant focal part of the city. We stayed in a small hotel within the palace walls and once you understand the layout of the original structure you can understand the private / public perspectives and appreciate how it became incorporated in the daily life of its citizens. Every corner provides cafes, restaurants, shops, galleries and interesting sights demonstrating how people have adopted the palace and adapted it to current times -it’s extraordinary!

From the moment of arrival at Split main bus station and after a wonderful short walk through the palace area and out of the west gate into the Piazza, the excitement builds into an avalanche of emotions when one sees the hotel at the other end of the pedestrian open space! It becomes increasingly clear that the decision to stay here for four nights was the best ever!
Wow. And wow again. Read the other reviews to get the details, but get carried away with it in this review...
There is also enough time in three days to really explore this historic centre and to take a bus for a day in Trogir too.
Why wait. Book now!!!

Lovely to walk through on a quiet Sunday morning. Beautiful architecture, narrow alleyways and good coffee.
