This volcano can be done in an overnight hike (some can do it all in one day, not me). You need a guide for safety reasons.

Will keep this brief. Turned down a guide, bot robbed by masked dudes with machetes and a shotgun. "They" told us it had been three years since a similar incident, only to come home, google, and read about the elderly German hiker that was shot twice earlier in the year. I smell rats.

You can see this volcano from just about anywhere in the city. Lots of great photo ops. We used it as a reference point to get around and especially back to our hotel. Just knowing it is south of the city makes it a good landmark.

Not suitable for climbing due to assaults. If you decide to climb it, take a guide. The city of Antigua is at the foot of the Agua volcano.

Our tour guide explained that this was a volcano which liked to blow off steam regularly. She advised that we could get a good photo with the arch framing the volcano, which we did. Only when we were driving out of Antigua did we see the volcano emitting a plume of black smoke to bid us farewell.
We had neither the time nor the resources to consider climbing the volcano as some people seem to do.
