Description: Built by Samuel Converse in 1862, the impressive Greek revival structure at 135 cooper street in Agawam, Massachusetts became home to the Federal Hill Club in 1936. Under the management of its owners, the Moretti family, that establishment remained a premiere restaurant for over fifty years. The Federal’s current owners Michael Presnal and Ralph Santaniello easily integrate the white linen elegance of that bygone era with a fresh and innovative “new American” cuisine that is perfectly prepared and impeccably served. Strong Italian and French influences inspire the contemporary culinary style of chef Presnal in dishes such as his red beet risotto, burnt tangerine glazed cod, and white-chocolate panna cotta. The Federal is dressed up as a special occasion restaurant, but is sociable and affordable enough for every occasion. The restaurant enjoys a dedicated following of appreciative diners from New York to Boston.

We enjoyed this restaurant so much we went 2 nights in a row. We did dine in the bar as we were with a group and wanted to enjoy the bar ambiance with the lighter menu. Menu was very imaginative. We particularly enjoyed the bruschetta- 4 ways. Wow. Perfect to share with the table. The hamburger was unique with the 3 thin, super tender patties accompanied with a mini-basket of fries. Pizza was good too although nothing special going on there. Lobster roll was fresh and delicious with plenty of lobster to satisfy. The first night we had an awesome server. He was attentive, friendly, took his time explaining all the specials. Service was A++, part of our reason for returning the 2nd night. We had a different server on the 2nd night. The service was no where near as good as the 1st Night. Service was adequate but disappointing after the level of service we enjoyed on our first night. She seemed a bit rushed and not really interested in explaining the specials and defiantly not as engaging. Other than that, no complaints. We will be back.

We went for our first time tonight. Everything was wonderful. Service was spectacular. Food was fresh and cooked perfectly. We ordered risotto balls, a small order of truffle mac and cheese. I had scallops and my husband has the salmon special. Dessert was the orange cake and creme brûlée. We will definitely be back.

Positive: Friendly and attentive staff and service. Very good cocktails.

Negative:
Chopsticks were black, i.e. burned.
"French" onion soup was not French style, i.e. the "soup" was more like a solid stew.

With some efforts the quality could go up.

We enjoyed a meal at The Federal prior to a concert at the Mass Mutual Center. We simply could not have had a better experience! We enjoyed cocktails at the bar and then apps, entrees and dessert in one of the lovely dining rooms. Alex, our waiter, made us feel that our having an exceptional experience at The Federal was his top priority. I cannot say enough about the food quality and service. Do yourself a favor and try this neighborhood gem, pronto!

This was our first time at The Federal and decided to make reservations on Open Table for our special night. We were pleasantly surprised by the clean, bright dining area and the fact that our special instructions were addressed for a quiet table for two. I was so impressed that all the staff members we encountered wished us a Happy Anniversary, it was a nice touch.

The server was well informed about the menu and additions and did a nice job with recommendations that were all well received. Thoroughly enjoyed the heirloom tomato with crab meat salad and fried oyster appetizers. Enjoyed the complimentary bread, pita chips, olive tapanade and hummus. Delighted that she recommended the halibut special as it was superb and the sirloin steak my husband selected was cooked perfectly.

We enjoyed the pear martinis which had a nice consistency and just the right amount of alcohol to not overpower it. Topped it off with dessert of strawberry rhubarb creme brulee and their complimentary home spun cotton candy, had to take a bag home for the kids too.

The dining room got a bit noisy as patrons arrived for the 7:00 PM reservations and not everyone knows how to speak in a low voice. The pace of the service and clearing of plates was all very well timed and did not feel rushed or like we were waiting. Overall it was a lovely night out with a well-prepared and unique meal. If you are a strictly meat and potatoes type of person this may not be your best choice as most of the menu is rather unique in some way, we happen to enjoy that about the location. I would highly recommend this for a special occasion but could see this would not be most peoples' choice for a normal Friday/Saturday night out since it was priced a bit higher than that.
