I booked a few tours with Barefoot and loved them all! The guides were very knowledgeable and helpful. Ross and Kevin couldn't have been more amazing. They went the extra mile by providing me with information about all of Panama, not just the city and their tours.

On the Monkey Island tour, we saw more monkeys that expected and the Capuchins even came on the boat to eat some banana from our hands! The cave tour was so unique in the remoteness and features. Just remember to bring sunscreen!! The canoe trip across the lake can get hot.

I also booked San Blas through Barefoot. Kevin made sure to remind me that the guides are not from his company and sometimes they take a little reminding to get things done. With a little reminder here and there I was able to see a few islands and really enjoyed my San Blas experience. You will want to bring your own snorkeling equipment as the stuff on the island isn't the best.

So, in summary, Barefoot Panama is an amazing company. Fully knowledgeable staff, great tours, and so very helpful! I cannot recommend them enough!!

We used Barefoot Panama for 2 day trips. The first was led by Kevin and included a tour of the old city, a stop to watch a ship pass through the canal, and visit to a nature preserve and museum to see and learn about local wildlife. Kevin was a wonderful guide. We were a small group of 9 people and he kept us all engaged. We learned and saw a lot. The second trip was with a guide for our party of 4. We started the day on a motor launch on the canal to get close to the forest and look for monkeys and birds. We saw various varieties of both. We went from there to some nature walks, followed by lunch. Alan was lots of fun and we enjoyed our time with him. I highly recommend Barefoot Panama.

Normally I don’t write reviews but Barefoot Panama warrants a wholehearted endorsement. Did we ever luck out in finding Barefoot Panama.

We noticed many flights to our destination in South America with long layovers in Panama, and got to thinking: could we exit the airport with our twin five year old boys, see the canal, and have a not-stressful first-time visit to Panama?

After doing a fair amount of research on Panama, we started looking for tours of the canal. We are fairly experienced travelers, and speak Spanish, and so at first we thought we would take public transit or rent a car, and do our own thing for our 15 hour layover. Looking at TripAdvisor and BP’s websites, we thought we would use a tour company just to get on the canal. Kevin answered my email quickly and paid attention to what I had said- he answered my questions and created a custom tour based on the time we had and our interests. Some things he offered we were not interested in, and he listened well to that too. After a few emails back and forth, we had a plan. I paid via PayPal. Simple and easy.

Just before the trip I realized two things- first, we were not sure the airline would hold our checked bags during the long layover, and second, we needed to figure out our transportation to the tour. I emailed Kevin for advice and was stunned to find out the tour included airport pickup and drop off. Amazing! And, their vehicle would have enough room for our checked bags should we have to lug them around.

Ross was right there as we exited customs that morning, holding a sign with our name on it and a big friendly smile. At 7 am, we had just flown all night and not slept well. Our two boys were restless. I was thinking, this poor guide, does he even know what he’s gotten himself into? But Ross was all sunshine and ease, and quickly bonded with all of us.

Exiting the airport into a warren of small streets and construction, it was immediately apparent that having a driver was the way to go. Ross knew his way around and negotiated traffic with ease. It was clear that local knowledge of shortcuts was imperative. The company van was roomy and comfortable, and even accommodated the child car seats we brought with us. Ross even helped install them.

We ended up spending around 14 hours together, and Ross was simply and utterly fantastic. He showed us the canal and made sure the boys saw monkeys. He taught them the differences between different species and trained them to hear their calls. He pointed out things in nature in a way that grabbed the boys’ attention and that they still recall; for example, the way a toucan flies with its heavy bill, or the way the monkeys rub limes on their bodies to rid themselves of insects. We went on a boat and saw the gigantic cargo ships, the old railway, islands, wildlife, and enjoyed it all.

He was flexible in the day’s itinerary, and moved us on to feeding at key points during the day. He told stories about history in a way that interested both the five year olds and us. Our conversations throughout the day were almost non-stop. He gave us choices at key points, but never overwhelmed us with too many options or too much information. Another very helpful aspect of this tour was that at every step of the way, admission was paid for- one less thing to keep track of, freeing us up to relax and enjoy more.

The Miraflores Locks and Museum were very interesting and we could have spent hours there. From an upper pavilion we could see the construction site of the new locks in the distance, beyond the existing ones just below us. Inside were several floors of interactive history and an auditorium with a good documentary.

Ross next took us to a nature preserve just outside Panama City. It was part park, part wild animals: think of strolling through a park and looking up to see a mama sloth with a baby. He found many sloths to show our boys. In the distance was the city skyline. Again, we could have spent a lot more time there, but were limited by our flight time. Ross did a fantastic job at time management.

Lastly Ross took us to the old part of Panama City, and told us the stories of the colonial port, sneak attacks, and showed us the ruins of a church, the remnants of a jail, and a secret passageway once used by Noriega to store weapons. Throughout the day, he engaged our boys in the stories he told, lifted them for better views, watched out for their safety, and grinned at their comments and silliness.

From there he calculated traffic and travel time and got us back to the airport in plenty of time. Ross is the kind of person you want to stay in touch with, and Panama is a place we definitely want to go back to. And when we return, we’ll be contacting Kevin and Ross at Barefoot Panama again.

Did not have all of the information needed. It was not explained that a stop at a store was to get provisions to to have because the meal would not be served until1:30. There was also $20 additional charge at the border + $2 fee to enter the departure area. People who booked elsewhere were not charged these fees. It is chaotic.

Hello Jan

We are sorry for your bizarre experience at the San Blas. We have told you via email, your $22 is waiting for you at the office.

Thank you for the review and for allowing us the opportunity to explain what happened above so that it does not happen to the San Blas adventurer reading this review....

Just to be crystal clear, all San Blas adventures are legally run by the Kuna Yala, no one else is allowed to run these tours, therefore we simply book you on the tour.

The San Blas Day Tour INCLUDES Border fee and entrance fee...
Hence Jan we have that money waiting for you.

You pay $20 to secure the deposit. The rest of the $130.00 you give, in cash, to the driver when picked up.
This all seems bizarre, but welcome to the San Blas islands, the entire area is run in cash. The laws and systems are the indigenous' laws and systems. The driver is supposed to take the cash, and use it throughout the day.

Lunch is included, lunch is at lunch time. There is a stop on the way to the indigenous islands for you to buy any snacks or drinks. we are sorry you did not take advantage of this stop.

The islands are truelly chaotic, we have been trying to explain this to clients for years, a decade now in fact. The system is not a "westernized" system, it is the Kuna system. people need to be open minded when going to the islands. The drive there is tough, the port is chaotic, if you are prepared and understand what you will be in for, you will have a great time.

I hope this has clears things up for you Jan and for anyone reading who want to go to San Blas.

Kind Regards

Barefoot Panama Team.
