“Nice to walk through”
Review of University Palace

University Palace
Reviewed 24 July 2017

The university is the back drop of a large square. It was busy with a theater festival when we visited. There was also a group of protesters walking through. It seemed peaceful, but we avoid protests when traveling so we did not linger. Interesting how many public buildings came to be called palaces -- my understanding is that other countries in Europe had palaces and Romania did not want to be left out.

If you choose to visit this plaza, walking is the best way to do it. I drove through here to get to our nearby hotel and it was confusing and it ultimately took me 30 minutes to get to my hotel which was within sight of the palace.

Piata Universitatie encompasses the University Palace as well as the square adjacent to it. There are four statues on the square. King Michael is the one sitting astride a horse and the other three are scholars notable to the formation of the Romanian language. The square usually has some sort of event be it a festival, exhibit or musical event or a combination of the three. I've not been able to find any kind of schedule of events though there are many events on the square. There was a Christmas market on the square in past years but this past Christmas of 2016, the market was moved to another square. I don't know if the move is permanent. The square is also a nice place to hang out as it has several restaurants and coffee houses around the square.

i was expecting this place to be decorated with Christmas lights in late November, but alas, it was not.
It continued to be rather neglected and not too looked after, which is a pity, as it has such a great potential.
