Not flash but potential to have more genuine cultural experience

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 31 Jan 2019
While not the fanciest resort available, the staff are all really lovely and up for a chat. We booked our tours through Skelly's tour desk which is run by a local Fijian family - extremely friendly people who actually gave us a taste of real Fijian culture and lifestyle rather than the pre-packaged, scripted 'cultural' experiences sold to white people by the foreign-owned tour companies. If you want a sterilised, white villa resort experience then probably not for you but good if you'd like to see some real Fiji.

At the bottom is a list of how this stacks up against other places we stayed while in wonderful Fiji. Being Fiji, anywhere you stay is going to be great; nothing should totally ruin the experience, because the people and landscape are just too amazing.

Check-in at the Sands was smooth and it's a picturesque place in total; perhaps the prettiest we stayed at as far as the beach and all goes. We got a nice welcome drink and then a very kind man carried our bags out to one of the far huts.

The rooms are very simple, and ours had neither AC nor connectable wifi, which was fine with us. They're very simple and meant to encourage you to be out and about, which Fiji itself is made for! Also, with the fan on, we didn't get warm at all, though we were there in what amounts to winter for the area.

I don't know about the activities that they offer, but there seemed to be less to do on site than at some other places we stayed at. However, please don't trust that too much, as we just weren't there all that much, instead being out rafting and seeing other islands and such. I did partake in some photography here at sunrise and sunset, though, because as I mentioned elsewhere, the views are great.

1.) de Vos, the Private Residence (4/5 room, 5/5 staff, 5/5 activities )
2.) Maui Bay "The View" Adult Villas (5/5 room, ?/5 staff; it was a weird stay, 5/5 things to do)
3.) Tambua Sands Resort (2/5 room due to simplicity and lack of AC/internet, 4/5 staff, 2/5 activities, but excellent landscaping gives this a bump!)
4.) Dreamview Villas (8/5 room, 5/5 staff, 2/5 activities, though nearby resort can be utilized)
5.) The Fiji Orchid (Raymond Burr's old place) (5/5 room, 5/5 staff, 1/5 activities, but excellent overnight stay on way to the airport)

Very outdated hotel. Minimal amenities. Shower doesn’t work. Rooms are very dirty. No beach chairs. Beach is not swimmable. No hair drier. No towels before 10am . I recommend eating somewhere else. Location is very remote and it takes hours to get anywhere on the island to take a tour. Would not stay here again. If traveling during holidays make sure you have your dinner and tour reservations booked early since everything gets very busy.

We had an amazing stay this week! The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helped with everything we needed. The Bule were large and had everything you need for a comfortable stay. **Be careful though as the floor is extremely slippery when wet!! The shower is the only downside to the accommodation, ours an another couples had very little pressure and was either freezing cold or boiling hot - we did report this several times to staff but I think it's just how it is.

The food in the restaurant was delicious and reasonably priced, the dinner menu changed every night so it was a relief not to have to pick from the same thing. There is a helpful tour desk within the hotel and they booked us on to some great trips - highly recommend the whales tale and Robinson island culture night!

If we were to stay again we'd definitely pay more for a room with a plunge pool, they were so much nicer than the garden view one we had (and the outside shower worked a treat apparently)!

We would however recommend some entertainment for the evenings to encourage quests to stay and buy a drink or 7.

Thank you for making us feel at home when we were so far away from our own! See you again!

Hi there, I just spent a week at the Tambua Sands with just myself & my 3 year old daughter. This resort is incredible! Its rich in natural beauty - it's so quiet, all you can hear are the waves crashing on the reef & the rustle of the leaves on the coconut trees. The view of the ocean is epic & unrestricted. The Bures are lovely; clean & have everything you need. We loved staying in them & being able to hear the birdsong or the sound of the rain hitting the ferns so close to where you sleep. So relaxing..
The staff are warm, friendly, funny, helpful & wonderful with kids! I highly recommend this home away from home on the beautiful Coral coast :)

Wonderful, friendly staff but they are let down by dated decor and a lack of maintenance to this hotel.
Remote location and very pricey food and drinks make this a place I can not recommend or would return to.
