I stayed at this hostel in Montevideo for 3 nights in a private room. The rooms are very basic and a bit prison-like which is in stark contrast to the building itself with the original colonial courtyard and architecture. The upside is that the social area in the courtyard is great with lots of sitting/hanging out room. The downside is that most of the rooms face the courtyard and the rooms downstairs don't seem to have windows based on my observations. So you can hear people hanging out and music playing (typically until around midnight on regular days and later on special occasions). The hostel does organize activities such as a Christmas Eve dinner, which is also nice if you're looking for a social scene. To summarize, it's great if you're looking for a hostel where you can easily socialize and meet people, but bring earplugs for sleeping.
The facilities are due for an upgrade. Toilets are often not working (ours wasn't when I checked in late at night even though they knew I was checking in that night, but they fixed it pretty quickly the following morning - they did provide a discount when asked; I also found some not working in shared bathrooms from time to time). Everything could use a paint job and new doors and locks, and newer sheets etc. We also stayed at El Viajero in La Pedrera, which was much more remodeled and taken care of.
The staff could also be more helpful which may be difficult as a bunch of them are also travelers who live there from time to time...we received wrong answers to a bunch of questions such as whether the market is open on Christmas Day (ended up wasting time and money going there to find out it was closed after all) or which restaurants are open. Would prefer they just said they didn't know!
Overall, it's an ok place to crash in a good location walking distance to the old city and a great place to meet people. But expect dated facilities and sometimes unhelpful staff.
