Awesome experience and marvelous place. Really incredible explorations hiking and biking; as well as dining and relaxing at the livings, the rooms or the spa.

Explora concept is quite unique and really wonderful.

Machu Picchu has been high on our travel wish list for some time. We looked at several US based active travel companies as possibilities. The travel companies all tend to price their travel by person. When we calculated the Explora price per person we realized we could save money and not have to move from hotel to hotel. Explora exceeded our expectations.

The Explora price includes: transportation from and to the airport, all meals with a special menu designed by Virgilio Martinez, all drinks except for a few high-end wines, daily explorations with knowledgeable Peruvian guides, and all entrance fees. Their location is near Urubamba which is in the center of the Sacred Valley. Each evening you meet with the guides and select an exploration that fits your interest. Usually, guests zero in on a day for their Machu Picchu visit well in advance so Explora can purchase all of the required tickets and arrange the guide. We traveled at the front end of the rainy season so most of our explorations ended up being private.

We found the lodge to be stunningly beautiful. The rooms are very spacious, comfortable, and modern. Every room has a lovely view of the valley. The outstanding customer service begins with a manager greeting you at the van whisking your luggage to your room so that you can go on a leisurely tour of the property. Along the way she introduces you to various members of the staff. You pause for a little tea, sign a couple of papers, and you are off to your room.

When we booked the trip we thought we were checking Machu Picchu off of our list. Somehow I expect we might return to Explora Sacred Valley.

Room tip: If you like active (hiking and biking) guided travel, this hotel is an awesome choice.

We (my adult daughter and I) stayed at Explora for six nights and would highly recommend it for people wanting a more in depth exploration of the Sacred Valley away from the crowds of the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.

We chose Explora having previously stayed at their Torres del Paine property (which we thoroughly enjoyed). So, we were already familiar with the Explora concept and like it.

The property is located about an hour and half from the Cuzco airport in the Sacred Valley. It’s at the very end of a long dirt road that passes one other resort property and a very small town (Uruquillos).

The property is architecturally stunning both outside and within. The rooms are well appointed with a soaking tub and walk in shower and have nice views of the valley and the mountains.

The food and drink service was excellent and they did a great job of accommodating our vegan dietary requirements. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and also offered many great vegan options.

We did five explorations while we were there: Maras Plateau, La Veronica, Cuzco, Huchuy Qosqo and Machu Picchu.

The explorations were all very good. Of the hikes (i.e., Maras Plateau, La Veronica and Huchy Qosqo), we enjoyed Huchy Qosqo the best. It was the most challenging, but it offered the best views and archaeological site (other than Machu Picchu). We didn’t do any of the mountain biking but saw some videos that other guests shared with us and it looked very cool.

In retrospect, if I had it to do again, I would have booked separate accommodations in Cusco and at Machu Picchu to visit those places. Visiting Cusco during the day was nice, but I think we would have had a more fulsome experience had we actually stayed there for a couple of nights. As for Machu Picchu, it’s not included in the Explora all-inclusive cost, so you have to pay extra for that even if you do that through Explora. I had not appreciated how much travel time is required to get to Machu Picchu. Between the ride to the train station from Explora, the train ride and the bus ride at the end, it’s at least 4 hours each way. If you instead stayed in Agua Calientes (or if you really want to splurge, at the Belmond property at the entrance to Machu Picchu), you could visit Machu Picchu early (before all the crowds arrive by train) and break up the travel.

That would have given us more time to enjoy the hikes and bike riding that Explora had to offer in the Sacred Valley itself, which I think is their unique offering.

Second visit to an Explora, but first time at SV. I’m a huge fan of their business model - just show up and they will take care of everything (note MP is the exception and must be booked in advance).

First, set expectations. Sacred Valley has a desert winter at altitude. Cold at night, but intense sun during the day. Bring sunscreen and a hat. The hotel is at 9500’ and sets a plan for you to acclimate on arrival. You must work your way up and the best hikes are at high altitude. There are alerts about mosquitoes in Peru, but I never saw any at the hotel or on any hike (including MP).

Now, the pros. The food is *exceptional*. Better than Michelin restaurants. Each meal was spectacular in flavor and presentation. Service (hotel and restaurant) was friendly and personal. Please try the “traditional tavern” dishes when available. And the flan. The rooms are comfortable, spacious, and modern. Pool and spa looked nice, but I barely used them.

Machu Picchu was pretty well coordinated, but it’s a long day. Lunch was included in a hotel (Inkaterra) in Aguas Calientes. A guide from Explora goes with you.

The only con for me was the area. I understand that we need to acclimate, but the lower altitude hikes in SV are boring. I enjoyed being outdoors, but my hikes were more nature walks - flat walking with no geographic features to enjoy. We talked about plants. Maybe that’s your thing … it isn’t mine. But I wouldn’t have been able to do my favorite hike, La Veronica (starts at 14,000’) had I not done the lower hikes…

Overall very happy with my trip and I look forward to my next Explora!

Room tip: Expect intense sun and heat. Even in winter.

This is our 2nd experience with Explora and it was wonderful. Our guides, Santos, Oscar, Desiree and Chaio were wonderful. Knowledgable, attentive, caring and kind. It is very important to be able to "read the room" and they were all great at this. Loved the delicious meals, the smaller portions and different tastes were just what I needed. The dinning/bar staff were always friendly and accommodating. We NEVER do all inclusives but Explora is the one situation where we will do it. The variety of the hikes, the opportunity to learn so much as we explore makes it all worth it. Truly enjoyable experience in nature.

Room tip: We hiked every day. But they have all sorts of different explorations. Breathtaking hikes.

Hi Happy Summer Beach,

First of all, thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at our lodge in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, as our team strives to ensure that all travelers have a memorable trip.

Our explorations are designed for people of all ages, and we offer different options so that each traveler can choose what suits them best. Additionally, many of our guides are locals, which allows for a deeper immersion into the territory during each exploration.

The lodge's menu was designed by Virgilio Martínez, owner of "Central," the number one restaurant in the world according to the 2023 ranking of The World's 50 Best Restaurants. It aims to help travelers connect with and explore the territory through its flavors.

We hope to see you again at one of our other destinations, such as the Patagonia National Park in Chile or El Chaltén in Argentina.

Warm regards,
Explora Team.

We just returned from a spectacular experience at Explora Sacred Valley. From the moment we arrived to the moment we departed, the staff and service was excellent -- friendly, informative, and organized. Everybody we encountered made us feel welcome, and everything we did over the 8 days we stayed came off seamlessly. With so many logistics to manage -- guests, explorations, meals, travel -- I don't know how they do it, but somehow they do.

The rooms are intentionally simple so as not to detract from the beautiful views of the fields and mountains behind the hotel. But despite the simplicity of design, this is a luxury property with jetted tubs, fluffy towels, and nightly turn-down service (complete with chocolate). The rural setting adds to the experience in my opinion, but if you don't want to wake up with the rooster or hear a donkey braying at night, bring some earplugs.

The bar and the restaurant are first class. If you have never experienced Peruvian food, this is a perfect opportunity to learn why Peru is considered a gourmet destination. All of the meals are delicious and visually stunning (including a fantastic breakfast spread). The staff is clearly proud to showcase their local cuisine -- in our case, working with us to arrange a special farewell dinner of cuy (guinea pig), a regional celebration meal. Trust me, it was delicious. Each of the dishes is like a small work of art that is both tasty and intentionally designed to help with altitude adjustment and fuel the next day's explorations.

As for those explorations: I honestly cannot say enough good things about them. Over the course of 8 days, we did 10 explorations (a mix of full and half day). Each one offered something unique in terms of history, geography, nature, and/or degree of difficulty/altitude. The hikes followed paths designed by Explora, so rather than following marked trails (like in a national park), you might follow a canal or hike across a freshly dug field. With this approach, you never encountered other tourists and even had small opportunities to connect with local people, if only to say "buenos dias" to a farmer or to wave at one of the local kids.

The guides on the explorations were absolutely exceptional. Each one -- and we got to experience several -- brought not only deep knowledge, but also their own personalities and interests. You never felt like you were on a standard tour with a standard "talk track." The guides shared what they were passionate about, but also had the wisdom to know when to be quiet. You felt like you were with a cool new friend who was really enthusiastic about sharing something they cared about with you, but also wanted you to experience it on your own terms.

But make no mistake, these are serious and well-trained people. They keep a close eye on how you are accommodating both the altitude and degree of difficulty on various treks. As a result, when you connect with them every evening in front of the fire to choose your next day's activities, they have a very good sense of what you are ready to do and can help you make good choices.

During our stay, we met some really friendly fellow guests, but interestingly, few (maybe no) other people from the US. I assume that their absence is the result of unrest earlier this year (and the State Department's decision to issue a Level 3 travel alert -- which has since been lifted). I really hope that changes. The Sacred Valley is a fascinating place and quite accessible from North America. If it -- and Explora -- are not already on your bucket list, they absolutely should be.

Hello Kelly,

First of all, thank you for sharing your experience with us. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at our Explora Sacred Valley lodge, as our team strives to ensure that every traveler has a memorable journey.

The gastronomic proposal was designed by the Peruvian chef Virgilio Martínez, owner of "Central," the second-best restaurant in the world according to The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2022 ranking. Inspired by the great biodiversity of the Sacred Valley, its history, and the culture of the people who live there, he developed a unique menu that reveals the magic of the place with every bite.

We offer various exploration options, each with different levels of difficulty, so that every traveler can choose the one that suits them best. Moreover, our local guides are the ideal people to explore this magical territory, as they share the history of their ancestors.

We hope to see you soon at one of our other destinations, such as the Travesía Atacama Uyuni, which connects the driest desert in the world with the Uyuni salt flats.

Warm regards,
Explora Team.
