The Mario Vargas Llosa surprised and impressed me at evey turn. Set in his birth home, the museum is well organized and modern, with holograms and videos that are strangely rendered but never-the-less endearing, rooms representing geographic locations the author lived in, and some artifacts of Llosa's. There is not much to photograph, but the museum's narrative on Llosa's life is highly visual and entertaining. Compared to other museums I've been to in Peru, this one is completely twenty-first century made. The tour was in Spanish only, and lasts two hours, which pass by quickly. I thought I would need more background info on Llosa before going, but the museum lays out his impressive life better than any introductory reading could achieve. I would not miss this museum if in Arequipa, especially if you have any interest in the Boom, or the literary currents of the second half of the twentieth century.

If you enjoy the writings of MVL, then this is a very worthwhile experience. The decor is extremely well-done, and there are holograms and short movies throughout the trip. The idea is that the houses of other Latin American Nobel winners are traditional museums, and this is the only one that offers a state of the art three dimensional experience. That said, you must have a good understanding of Spanish, as everything is in that language. You need to book ahead, as there are set times for the showings. You cannot simply show up. Overall, extremely worthwhile, as it shows the various life stages of MVL and his influences. My only recommendation is that one of the guides needs to improve his customer relations skills.

This was one of the best museums i have ever visited. The base of the museums were the guide and holographic movies. Unfortunately the guide spoke Spanish only. With guiding in English i would have given full score

This is really worth a visit. But be warned its all in spoken Spanish. The location on the map isn't quite right and locals didn't know where it is, so may take a time to find. There is a whole sequence of rooms for each period of his life to work through, so allow two hours. It includes state of the art holography with the great man himself speaking and even interacting with his characters. There are clips acted out from some of his novels including the Green House which bring things to life, although potentially a spoiler. Overall one of best museums in Arequipa, some of the others could learn a lot from this.

This is a new attraction in Arequipa, the birth place of the Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa. The museum is a state of the art place which just opened less than a month ago. It is an excellent interactive place which goes over the author's life. Unfortunately the place has no website and no clear information about how to get tickets, hours of operation, the fact that you need to book a reservation ahead of time, etc. So since I was in Arequipa I heard (word of mouth) about the place and decided to go on my last day there. It turned out that I needed a reservation and I had to beg to be accommodated in a group which was scheduled to start the visit at 11:45 am but the visit actually started 1/2 hour later since they were not quite ready (the students with whom I went had been waiting since 10 am). Of course I could not stay for the entire visit since I had another engagement at 1:30 pm. So, the bottom line: excellent place to visit but very specific information about the place is needed.
