Grand Hotel Gervasoni is very well located in Valparaiso. This exquisite classic and elegant old home has been kept in excellent condition over the years and it gives you an idea of what it must have been like living there in the golden years of Valparaiso, the world famous town on the Chilean Pacific coast that historic celebrities the likes of Pablo Neruda have called home.

We stayed there for two nights and three days and had an overall pleasant experience. Staff was always friendly and helpful. They were always happy to provide assistance when asked, to give us directions and suggestions of must sees in Valparaiso. The house itself is beautiful and our room was quite large, had its own bathroom. Nothing fancy but comfortable and clean.
The nightly rate includes breakfast. However, it was a bit disappointing. It was unfortunately too simple, had nothing impressive about it and had few options to choose from. I was hoping for more fruits, more pasties or breads. Instead, we got various cereals, cold cuts and yogurt, OJ, coffee and tea. Like I said, not bad, but disappointingly bland and uninteresting.
We were also surprised to see how quiet the house is. There's never any action there. There's such a beautiful rooftop terrace, it's a great place for a night cap while enjoying the view below. Too bad people are not taking advantage of it to have some fun with friends.
The hotel was too quiet, there was no action what so ever of any kind. But, if that is what you're into, you'll be happy here.

We were at the Gervasoni for three nights. We arrived anticipating the kind of stay that is usual for a boutique-type hotel - possibly a few quirky features, maybe the odd strange happening but friendly staff and a lovely welcoming clean quiet hotel ... especially since this hotel seems to have acquired a four-star reputation.

We were a disappointed. Yes, the location is really great - perched a little way up the hillside but a really easy walk to the bustling downtown. And certainly the evening we spent on the terrace with a bottle of wine and a tray of nibbles was just lovely. The view was enjoyable - and it must have been absolutely fantastic before the large building that blocks half the harbour was put up. The building itself is also a real treasure!

However there were minuses. We were disappointed by the level of care and service that we saw and experienced - in a general way. It was shown, for instance, by the way provision of food at breakfast time seemed somewhat haphazard; by the fact that our roomsafe was just left locked open and staff said nothing could be done. The room cleaning was definitely lightweight - and obviously had been for a while. Overall we had a feeling of a lovely old building (a hotel for just 10 years I was told), somewhat down at heel and heading downhill, with a young staff that tried hard but didn't quite understand the hotel business.

So, by all means enjoy a stay at this hotel, but just don't expect the kind of experience you would get from place with a 4/5 rating.

Room Tip: The rooms on the top floor are up a narrow steep flight of stairs

We stayed here for the last 3 nights of our 3 week driving trip through Chile and Argentina. As expected, the hotel is quite old but this gives it character and our room was very spacious with our bed upstairs on an elevated level which meant that we had lots of room to manoeuvre downstairs, although this format might not suit everyone. The hotel was quite quiet during our stay which probably contributed to the peaceful atmosphere but it was a restful stay close to the mani attractions of a bustling city. The views from the terrace bar and breakfast area are superb and only slightly spoiled by the building in front. Staff were invariably helpful and friendly. There are some allocated car parking spaces in the street outside for those requiring this and check in will provide a hotel note for your dashboard to confirm parking eligibility. Tight manoeuvring on the road outside for those not too comfortable with their driving.

Hotel location is ideal for access to the favoured walking tour areas of the city and nearby funiculars can take you quickly down to the harbour from areas for boat tours etc. A nice change from a chain type hotel with an ample breakfast provided. WiFi variable, and one needed to wait a while for the hot water to come through for the shower though it was excellent once running. A comfortable and quiet stay with character.

My boyfriend and I came here during our South American vacation. We book a room with a gorgeous view of the ocean and the staff was very friendly and helpful with recommending things to do in the area. Room was comfortable and cannot complain.

Hotel was decent, but very old and the photos online are quite strategic - not exactly what the hotel looks like now. Stairs are a challenge with luggage- steep and narrow. Staff were very friendly and overall the stay was fine. Nothing to rave about though.
