We stay here at the beginning of our South American Adventure. Great location just across from the Santa Lucia Hill and monument, markets just around the corner and close enough to wander down into the Downtown area. A wide array of restaurants close by and felt that it was a good start to our adventure.

Room Tip: Were had a front room view which was great so we could see where we were going to explore.

Wonderful pool area, good gym, excellent breakfast, free use of 3 computers available in the business center, helpful personnel, comfortable and silent room, with good blackouts the leave it very dark. The only problem is the insufficient illumination in the room, so that it is hard to read anything.

This hotel was perfectly acceptable for our stay, but it should be noted that there were some areas in which improvements could be made. It seems the hotel may be going through some changes, for the better. Upon first entering the hotel, you see a bright, modern, trendy lobby. The restaurant on the second level looks and feels the same, and it cleverly overlooks the lobby. Visit the pool and bar on the 5th floor and the fun, trendy atmosphere continues - especially at night when the brightly colored lights rotate to add to the atmosphere. Sadly, that's about where this style ends. The hallways leading to the guest rooms, and the rooms themselves, are a bit more dismal, with carpet and decor that's a little tired and boring. Don't get me wrong - the rooms are quite acceptable, but they're a little down-trodden and boring compared to the public spaces in the hotel.

We had a large room with 2 double beds, a large work table with dresser drawers, a chair, a flat screen TV, mini-fridge, and safe (large enough for a laptop). The bathroom was an acceptable size, as well, although there were too few towels (isn't that always the case? Why do hotels only provision 2 towels for a room that presumably can sleep 4 people?). The shower had good pressure (although the water temperature varied from hot to cold now and then), and there was an adequate shelf for toiletries. The hairdryer was fine, even though it was the kind that you have to hold the button down the whole time. The room itself was fine, as mentioned before, but it was boring. The decor needs to be updated -- better linens, nicer curtains, etc. The view out the window (on the 6th floor, facing the back) was of industrial machinery - quite depressing, but also very quiet at night since we weren't facing the street. The safe was easy to use, the air conditioning worked fine, and the complimentary WiFi was fast and easy -- so really, no complaints.

The complimentary breakfast was ample, with adequate choices including a variety of breakfast breads, fruits, yogurt, cold cut meats, cheeses, cereal, bacon and scrambled eggs. There was coffee, tea, milk, and various fruit juices. The only things I'd prefer to see done differently are a better variety of eggs (there were only runny scrambled eggs both days we were there), and some to-go cups for the coffee. It also would've been nice if there was some hot-cocoa, or cocoa-powder, instead of just coffee/tea.

We didn't actually use the pool, although we did visit the pool deck one night. We'd apparently just missed some evening snacks being served, as well as some "2 for 1" drinks. Sadly, when we went back the following night, on a Saturday night, everything was closed. Huh? On a Saturday night? We were told we could sit there, but none of the lights were on, and the bar was closed - so not sure what the point would've been.

The staff was extremely helpful, at all points. They were accommodating to all of our requests -- for additional towels, for help with a taxi to the airport, for help in booking a tour to Valparaiso and Vina del Mar, and even for splitting our bill onto two credit cards. They spoke English very well, and were very hospitable.

The only other thing that I'd say was a bit of a downside to this hotel is the location. When I originally booked this hotel, I thought it was in a good location for sightseeing. It is fairly central, and it's literally steps from a metro stop - but now I'm not entirely sure it's in the best area of town. I was told on 3 occasions either inside the hotel or right outside the hotel to watch out for my camera, as I might get mugged. That's obviously good advice for any traveler, but it doesn't set my mind at ease that my hotel is in a neighborhood that warrants that kind of caution. There was also a very large protest/march of solidarity right in front of the hotel one night, which caused all the neighboring shops to close their metal doors and gave me concern for safety. I'm sure it was perfectly fine -- but in retrospect, if I were to visit Santiago again, I might try to stay in a different neighborhood (maybe the Providencia area, although that would undoubtedly be more expensive).

Some positives about the neighborhood are that Cerro Santa Lucia (Santa Lucia Hill) is just a block away if you want to climb the hill for a view, and the lovely neighborhood called Barrio Lastarria is about a 10 minute walk away, and it has a nice selection of outdoor restaurants, cafes, street performers, and shops.

All in all, this hotel was perfectly fine for our purposes and our quick weekend trip. In all honesty, we got a very good airline rate at the hotel, so I felt it was a good value for what we paid.
