We visited here at lunchtime on a Monday and weren’t wowed by the experience.
There are some fish counters, but it’s not really worth going out of your way to see.
Inside are numerous bars and restaurants where you will get pestered by waiters and owners every few metres to go into their establishment.
In the end we opted for one when we’d been round the market, the food was good, although given they spoke minimal English, we didn’t quite get what we expected (our fault as much as theirs!)
Avoid the big touristy restaurant in the middle, stick to the smaller ones by the fish stalls themselves.

Called with our tour guide and enjoyed the market. Was advised not to display jewellery or cameras before hand... 'ditch the gold'. Market was good, in particular the fish market. Worth a visit.

This central fish market in Santiago is popular for seafood. Apart from lots of raw seafood that you can purchase, there are a few restaurants in the market. It is a very busy market with lots of locals haggling.

My cell phone was ripped out of my pocket by a gang of thieves at 2:30pm in broad daylight and they ran across traffic. I read some warnings about the place but couldn't believe it was that bad. At the police station, there was another couple robbed near there also. But no police anywhere around the area, just lots of criminals. And the police station was no help either - 2-3 hour wait just to file a report.

Stopped by whilst on a guided tour. Nice atmosphere, and certainly one of a large number of attractions that are worth seeing in the city. However, it is as much of an eating place as a market. We were advised by the locals that for the same money you can get a much better meal in a restaurant, but time permitting it would have been great to eat in the market - there are so many eating places to choose from.

The building itself has a lot of architectural interest so either get a guided tour or read up about it first.

I have seen comments about safety - just take the same precautions you would in any major city, no loose jewellery, no wallets on show, hold cameras. Don't make yourself an easy target. We did a lot of walking and had no problems.
