Good news and bad news

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 19 Nov 2012
My wife and I stayed 3 nights last week at Hotel 1929. First the good news. Due to a very early flight into Singapore we arrived at the hotel at 8:30am. The staff was very friendly and quickly arranged for our luggage to be put into storage. They said our room would be ready at 11:30am and it was--not expected but greatly appreciated. Breakfast each morning was average-- a selection of 2 cereals, juice, fruit and a plate of eggs, a sausage etc. Location is a 2 minute walk from Chinatown and a 5 minute walk from Outram Park and Chinatown Metro Stations.
And now the bad news. I booked a "double superior" room. It measured approx. 3.5m by 3.5m and if you put 2 suitcases on the floor there is no room to walk-- you have to sit on the bed!
The "ensuite" is a corner cubicle measuring 1.1m by 1.1 m. It is encased on 2 sides by clear glass with a middle frosted section. This means when you get off your bed you have a good view of your partner having a shower or using the toilet. Also when using the toilet you get the odd drop of water from the shower head located above the toilet. The bed is positioned against the wall facing the street. The window when opened encroaches over the mattress. The verandah door could not be opened because of the bed frame along side it.
The room has been described as petite a better description would be a shoebox.
So in summary Hotel 1929 is a good place to stay if you want location and friendly staff but nothing else.

Dear MickandKay1,

Greetings from the team at Hotel 1929!
Thank you for your feedback.

Housed in a conservation building, the rooms are uniquely configured and space is indeed quite a constraint. Perhaps for your next trip into Singapore, you may like to try our sister property, New Majestic Hotel, which is just on the next street. With more facilities and larger rooms, you may find it more to your liking.

On a lighter note, we are happy to hear that you were pleased with the level of service provided by the team.

We hope to be of service to you again the next time you are visiting!

Best regards,

We loved this hotel for our first visit to Singapore. We could walk to everything and spent two fun nights in Chinatown, sampling the local food and beer, both were delicious. The staff at this hotel were so friendly and helpful, the rooms were spotless, breakfast delicious and the free iceblocks a treat after a hot day of walking. We loved the traditional style area, the beautiful buildings that we could view from the cute little verandah and the incredibly hospitable Singaporean people. We would definitely stay at this great boutique hotel when we next visit Singapore.

The rooms are tiny; roughly 2.5m x 2.5m with a twin bed. When I first checked in, I thought it was ok for just one night. But in the middle of the night, I kept having trouble to sleep from the sound of AC and compressors outside. Even worse, I felt there were bed bugs making my skin itch (never had that problem with other hotels I've stayed and I travel quite often for business).

However, the staffs are very helpful especially when it comes to getting a cab for ya. Breakfast was average.

Dear CooCooRiku,

Warm greetings from Hotel 1929!
Thank you for your feedback.

We are disappointed that you had an otherwise experience staying with us. We admit that some of the rooms are quite petite in size, but rest assured that the rooms are all cleaned thoroughly daily and that we have not had any problems with the cleanliness of the rooms.

Should you find yourself back in Singapore again, we hope to have another opportunity to be of service to you.

Hotel is in a good location close to buses, train station & taxis. Staff all very helpful and friendly.Very clean and tidy and good daily room service.
Room is exceptionally small not much bigger than a single garage, shower is over the toilet and hand basin is next to the double bed, fridge is the smallest ive seen, holds about 4 tins of drink. The worst thing about the hotel is the noise, we found it very hard to sleep. We booked a quiet room but on arrival were told the only rooms available were on the street front. We stayed for 3 nights for a stop over, i would not recommend any longer than 2/3 nights given size of room and noise. We chose the hotel using trip advisor based on comments and price. Accommodation in Singapore we found expensive so Hotel 1929 at under $200.00 per night for the location is good value but suggest air plugs. Approx $40.00 taxi fare to airport early morning.

Room tip: Request room not facing the road. Most face the road so need to make it quite clear in your booking request. We requested a quiet room but were still allocated a road front room. Friday and saturday nights very noisy given the location of the hotel. Air plugs probably the best solution. Room had its own heat pump unit and it worked well.

Dear MEANDMEX,

Warm greetings from the team at Hotel 1929!
Thank you for your kind review.

We are pleased that you found the hotel's central location a huge plus to your travels around Singapore, and that the team provided exceptional service during your stay.

Housed in a conservation building, we do admit that the rooms can be rather compact. Perhaps you may want to try a higher room category the next time. Alternatively, you may also like to consider our sister property, New Majestic Hotel, which is just on the next street.

We recognize that the roads can be bustling with life in the evenings, and as such, we would be happy to do a room change to a quieter room should there be availability. In this instance, we do regret that we were unable to assist you with any room move due to the high occupancy.

We do hope that you will give us another opportunity to impress you with our commitment for continual improvement.

Best regards,

I'll start with the positives. The staff at the hotel are very friendly and the rooms are clean and neat and the balcony is pretty cool. The location is also great, it's a short walk to China town and the MRT is very close.
However the room does not provide any barrier to the noise outside, and there is a a lot of noise. We did ask to change rooms, but were told there were none available. They did suggest we get some ear plugs, we had already thought of that and they were providing little relief. As well as the noise outside, the air con was noisy and as the bed is pushed up against the wall every time I moved the blind would bang against the wall.
Finally, I did understand the room was small when I booked it, however the toilet is right net to the head of the bed behind a semi frosted piece of glass. For a room that is designed to be shared with another person it can be quite uncomfortable.
I wouldn't be keen to stay here again.

Dear Mlbrn85,

Greetings from Hotel 1929!
Thank you for taking time out to write this review.

We are disappointed that your stay was less than satisfactory. We admit that the streets can be rather lively, and we would be happy to offer a room change to a quieter room, should there have been availability.

Being that the hotel is housed in a conservation building, we recognize that space is a constraint in the rooms. Perhaps the next time you are in town, you may like to try our sister property, New Majestic Hotel, which is just on the next street.

First up the service at this boutique Hotel is excellent.Every member of the Hotel staff greeted us during our stay. The rooms while small are beautifully appointed and in keeping with the history of the Hotel. The free icecream on the deck is a nice little touch as is the small but free minibar.Situated close to Chinatown and the street address has a lot to offer with a number of bars and restaurants. This is another Hotel that has a glass partition between bed and bath so be prepared for that if bathroom privacy is your thing.Perfect short stay Hotel for Chinatown. These smaller Hotels are certainly giving the larger chains some competition.
