Owner description: NUS Baba House is a heritage house which exhibits the Straits Chinese material culture in a domestic context, providing the unique experience of visiting a Straits Chinese family home dating back to the early 20th century. It facilitates research and learning about the history, culture and evolution of the Peranakan community, as well as architectural traditions, urban changes and conservation efforts in Singapore. The gallery on the third floor hosts temporary exhibitions encouraging discourses on cultural encounters, hybridity and their contemporary implications in Singapore and beyond. - English Heritage Tours Tuesday – Friday, 10am - Mandarin Heritage Tour : First Monday of each month, 10am Self-guided Visit: Saturday, 1.30pm / 2.15pm / 3.15pm / 4pm

This tour only takes around an hour, and will give you a fascinating insight into the Peranakan culture and the intricacies of an everyday Peranakan house.

Only ten years ago this same house was in a state of decay (you can see this from the pictures on display on the top floor), so all of those involved in the restoration have done a superb job. The tour guide is extremely knowledgable so you will learn a lot in a short space of time.

Unfortunately you are not allowed to take photos inside, although there is no problem taking photos outside.

You do need to book in advance, which you can do from the NUS Baba House web site. Groups are fairly small so try do it as much in advance as possible to avoid disappointment.

This 1 hour tour gives you such a unique insight into what is Peranakan and how the different cultures of the early Singaporeans melded together. The tour guide was very knowledgable and I am amazed this is a free tour... not even canvassing for donations at the end (which I think they should)

I've walked past this old house a few times but have never actually got around to making an appointment to see the inside. The exterior has been restored and looks quite nice, and if you're in the area it's still worth a quick stop.

My family group of 6 spent 2 good hours in Baba house with a passionate voluntary tour guide named Mr. Chai and a friendly NUS staff. The story behind the architecture and furniture helped me to appreciate more the history and emergence of Singapore to its current position. If you're lucky to be confirmed with the tour, then you should finish just about time to have a nice walk along Neil Street before heading to lunch @ the MICHELIN Kok Sen restaurant within some blocks away

This place can only be visited in connection with a free tour of approx. 1.5 hours which requires prior registration. I waited a couple of weeks for a free seat on a Saturday but it was worth waiting. You will get insights into an original shop house that belonged to a peranakan family, its lifestyle and the architecture of these traditional houses. On the way there you may explore the area which offers many more preserved shop houses and is close to the central business district and Chinatown.
