Review of Hotel ICON
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 1 Nov 2012
We stayed at the Hotel Icon for 5 days on the way home from a round the world trip with our 3 year old, 15 month old and my first-time-to-Hong-Kong parents.

The hotel is attached to a hospitality school and is obviously aimed at the business market. It is very modern with very well appointed rooms, restaurants, gym and pool and spa.

Thanks to the hospitality school, there are staff everywhere but at no point did I feel hovered over. There is always an experienced staff member on hand to help if someone needed to help but only once did we have a problem (with a drink order taking 30 minutes to arrive) and once we complained, the supervisor stepped in and sorted the situation to our satisfaction.

I was a little worried when we arrived that our kids would not be catered for but the staff were beyond helpful. From highchairs/booster seats and loan strollers to daily surprises of cupcakes or toys delivered to our room, we were overjoyed at the effort they went to to make the kids feel welcome.

The pool is not overly little kid friendly but it was more than adequate and the staff at the pool fetched highchairs for poolside lunches and seemed to pay extra attention when the kids were around the pool. Our kids spent quite a bit of time in the outdoor gym shower which (since it was not used once whilst we were there), doubled as a wading pool and fountain!

We stayed in a harbour view room with an adjoining room for the kids. My 3 year old was overjoyed at her king sized bed and there was plenty of room for a cot. The kids were delighted with the view of the light show before they went to bed at night and the bath was so deep not even my monkey 15 month old could climb out.

We used a Hotel Icon babysitter on 2 occasions. This lady was amazing. My sometimes clingy 3 year old was enthralled with her within 5 minutes and actually only gave me a fleeting wave when it was time for us to go. She was also saintlike when my 15 month old would not sleep on the night we did not get home until well after midnight. He might not have gone to sleep but he was entertained and happy and that was really nice to come home to.

My parents had not been to Hong Kong before so the location was important. I was worried we were a little too far from the waterfront and harbour but it was an easy and pleasant walk. They also have a shuttle bus doing laps of the important places if you did not want to walk.

The concierge were fabulous making bookings at restaurants we did not think we would get into at short notice as well as recommending places to eat nearby. They were also helpful organising tours for Mum and Dad.

The food was nothing spectacular but there was a good choice and the breakfast buffet was one of the best I've seen for a small hotel. Mind you, due to not wanting to put the kids with a babysitter for a 3rd night (!) we did not get to eat at Above and Beyond which is their signature restaurant. I have heard good reports about it and will definitely make that a priority next time.

We had a dedicated housekeeping person for our floor. I assume each floor would have one. It was really lovely to have some one get to know our needs and remember them each day. We could also make small requests direct to him rather than having to call housekeeping. This was great for extra things we needed for the kids.

The spa is an Angsana by Banyan Tree spa which is Thai. It took me a second to adjust when I was greeted with 'Sawatdee Kah'! It was beautifully appointed and the staff were most professional and really good at what they do.

We would stay again as a family, we would stay if travelling as a couple (maybe upgrade to a suite on the club floor) and my husband is definitely going to stay for business next time he is in Hong Kong.

Recommended!

Room Tip: In a harbour view room, the light show is a nice way to be entertained during pre-dinner drinks...

What more can I say? The reviews sum it up pretty well.

Stayed here for a week with some friends. Utilised most of the food and beverage outlets and they were good also.

The facilities were fantastic! We took advantage of the pool and gym every morning and what a fabulous view from there.

Good value for money in HK, very new modern hotel, very clean and spacious enough.

Complimentary mini bar (soft drinks, bottled water, confectionary) replenished daily.

The only negative is the location is not as central in TST.

However, there is a complimentary shuttle bus that will take you downtown to central TST that leaves every 15 minutes from the hotel.

Great job ICON team, we will be back.

Fantastic - service as it's best. The hotel is Design in every small detail. Fitness and the pool has a location with a fantastic view. Not a huge hotel just around 200 rooms so it's more a " familiarly feeling"

I stayed in this hotel the night after I stayed in Kowloon Shangri La. I found this hotel is very new and modern style and it is run by the nearby university students. the lobby restaurant served some great osyter at a really good value (only $18/each). the room was very beautiful and quiet. but the only complaint was the location. I need to walk 8 min to the major shopping area. however I will recommend this hotel to my friends for sure.

I learned that this is a teaching hotel, and in retrospect I can see that. The service is extremely attentive and eager to please, but perhaps not always very seasoned. The only side effect of this for us was my gf being asked to show her room key re-entering the hotel after stepping outside, which she found upsetting. In general the service was excellent, and the front desk / bell desk was very helpful.

We loved the Hotel Icon. The view was superb and the rooms and common spaces are modern and immaculate. I think that for this size of room, the layout, with a curving bathroom door, and the eye shaped walk-in shower was the best I have ever seen. Full marks from me. The room also boasted a very comfy and stylish chair overlooking the harbour and a comfy king sized bed.

The rooftop pool and gym are excellent, and we made good use of it. Free minibar is nice, but I need more than 1 beer :-) lots of room in the fridge to add your own.

Overall the hotel is very stylish and modern and is a perfect place to retreat to after a busy day in Hong Kong. The lobby restaurant/bar is cool, with a huge growing/green wall, and a good drink and food menu. The Market on the second floor boasts an impressive breakfast buffet (not included) and I would like to try dinner. Sadly we did not get to try the higher-end restaurant on the top floor. (Above and Beyond).

Note that with respect to Above and Beyond, the website is slightly misleading, only club-level rooms get the free breakfast and perks listed on that page.

Overall, Hotel Icon exceeded my expectations and was a great deal compared to other similar hotels in Hong Kong. I would not hesitate to book here again on a return visit. Book early to take advantage of their discount.

Room tip: We had a Icon 36 Room on a higher floor with an amazing Harbour View. The views are amazing, make sure you get one!
