The Beijing National Center for the Performing Arts, affectionately known as "The Egg," is well worth seeing for the architecture alone. However, being a thespian, what I really enjoyed was the Theatre Museum inside. The displays are wonderful, and the museum artfully combines scenic models (of incredible detail) with film montages of various productions. There are also costume displays. The museum includes displays of Chinese Opera, Drama, Dance and also includes Shakespeare, and Italian operas. I really enjoyed myself and could have spent another hour just taking everything in.

Quite a beautiful and impressive piece of architecture. Sunset is best to have the light reflect of the building and water.

I attended a performance of the Peking opera Red Cliff, which was fantastic. Spellbinding sets and costumes, plus great music. A colleague suggested I get there early and view the exhibitions and walk around the space, which was solid advice. The architecture takes a while to absorb. An exhibit on NCPA past performances, chock-full of information, dioramas of the productions, and costumes was fascinating. Even if you're not attending a performance, it's worth a stop over from Tiananmen Square to take a picture or walk around.
