Ate twice in the week we were there as we enjoyed so much the first time.
The Beijing duck is a must but frankly it's a bit rich. Do try the spicy chicken and peanuts, really good. The service is rapid and with a smile. My favourite restaurant.

I have eaten at Dadong before, Jinbao branch, but later found out that this is the original Dadong in Beijing so after enjoying Jinbao i had to do dinner here. I was accompanied by a local associate of mine which made finding the place a little easier. The order was a full roast duck with a deep fried sweet and sour squirell shaped fish. The duck was excellent, as good as the Jinbao Dadong i thought. The fish also was excellent. The authentic feel of this restaurant together with predominantly locals that are dining here is what gives it an edge over its sister branch. Prices here seem lower than Jinbao though. This is a multiple award winning restaurant and they have the accolades to prove it with the service and flavours backing them up. You will have no regrets visiting here. Nb. I visited in March 2015.

I’ve been coming to this specific Dadong location since 2002 and I’m sorry to report that it has gone downhill over the years. The duck is still good and they are still expensive but their food choices haven’t changed or innovated much in the 15 years I have been going. They also haven’t remodeled or rejuvenated the restaurant at all and the facilities are looking worn. It definitely doesn’t feel like the fine dining restaurant it used to be. To top it off, the flavors of the duck “nest” on my latest visited were lacking and the duck itself just didn’t seem as good.

There are so many choices in Beijing to have kaoya (Peking duck), it seems the heyday for Dadong is over.

First impressions were intimidating: 1) here is the largest restaurant menu you have ever seen & 2) you have 90 minutes to eat because we need to turn the table. It got much better.

Firey roast cauliflower, deep fried prawns in mayonnaise & Yangzhou fried rice each served fresh, hot and bursting with flavor. Da Dong is famed for roast duck but the skills of the kitchen are deep and wide. Duck skin was crisp and not too greasy. Service was discrete, attentive and professional. Easy walk from TuanJieHu station and nearby hotels. Not inexpensive but good value considering the quality of food & atmosphere.

Interesting business dinner at Dadong. Started of with a selection of their starters, one even more inspiring than the other. Red cherries which were actually goose liver, fantastic tender and tasty beef cubes in dried chilly, bird nest shaped lettuce with ... I guess it was chicken. Main was roasted duck , eaten in three different ways: traditional pancakes (can't go wrong with that one), hollow rolls (reminded me indian kitchen ...) and a third less impressive way which I forgot already... tradition and focus on what's good is still the winning option. Next time - and I will be back - an assortment of starters, and a good old style Beijing duck. Drinks ? Good old Qingdao beer, well chilled yet served in wine glasses ;-)
