Stayed in the very welcoming Houtong Hotel over Chinese Lunar New Year 2012. Arrived on New Year's Eve and was invited to join in a traditional meal with other guests and the owner's family. Overall the hostel was clean, warm (with both heated air-con and a radiator in the room). The staff were very friendly, always keen to give directions and recommend places.

The hostel is located in the middle of a hutong, although difficult to find first time it means that you get a good taste of hutong living. This is ideal for longer staying guests - if just passing through Beijing it might be better to stay more central.

We booked a private room with ensuite in the East building. I was very specific in the emails that we wanted a private room near the back that was quiet and they assured us that was what we would get. The problem is that none of the rooms are quiet. All rooms face the courtyard. The room is very basic - double bed with shower and toilet. Nothing fancy. Accommodation in Beijing is very expensive and this was the cheapest we could find without going to one of the hotels that have a bad reputation.

It's an okay place but it can get noisy with other backpackers and travelers around. They do pickup service from and to the airport (although it's a bit expensive) and trips to the Great Wall. Staff is friendly and helpful. Taxis will not know where this place is so I highly suggest using their pickup service. The card that they have isn't very accurate - again, taxis won't know where this place is even if you give them the card with the address and the map. The nearest subway is a 15-minute walk. There are a few restaurants and shops around. Getting a taxi in this part of town is very difficult - but again, that's Beijing. Overall this is an okay place to stay but the prices are just a bit on the expensive side for what you get.

I just stayed one night here but wished we had a few more. The courtyard and rooms are decorated beautifully, and make you feel as though you are truly staying in a classic Asian guesthouse. We used the common bathroom which was very clean, and convenient. As other reviews state, it is a little noisy in the courtyard, so bring a pair of earplugs if you're a light sleeper. Convenient to the subway station, and many food options close by. Charming section of the hutongs, 10 minute rickshaw ride to Forbidden City.

My husband and I stayed five nights in a private room with shared bathroom in the main building. I'd expected something a bit nicer for the price we paid (190RMB/night, IIRC). All of the rooms in the main building are right off the common area, so there's a lot of noise - music, people talking, children running around and yelling, etc. Our room backed onto an alley, and we could hear people spitting in the street. There was a dim lamp on the side table, and a three-bulb fixture on the high ceiling (two bulbs of which had burned out). We'd just paid 120RMB/night to stay in a wonderful, quiet, ensuite with a flat screen tv and big bathroom in Xi'an (at the Seven Sages Hostel - highly recommended!) so this seemed felt like quite a step down, and for what we paid, it didn't feel like a good value.

If you don't mind noise, it's fine. The bathrooms were kept clean, the staff was helpful enough. They do things like dumpling making parties on Saturday evenings. It also seemed like a good choice for backpackers looking to stay in dorm rooms.

My main disappointment was that based on the website photos, I expected a more special ambience at Red Lantern House. After staying there and more carefully reading the other reviews, I see that the ambience I was hoping for can only be found at the separate wings (which were out of our price range.)

All this said, by North American standards, this is still a decent value. It wasn't awful, but next time I stay in Beijing, I'll be looking elsewhere unless my budget allows for a stay in one of their other wings.

We stayed for 5 days and everything was nice despite from the garden during night time. It's always people talking and making noise. Staff don't do nothing at all...

Small rooms but nice and the baths area really comfortable.
