This hostel was a bit difficult to find, but the instructions provided on their website got us there alright. It is located in a bustling hutong with some good inexpensive restaurants around.

The very best thing about this hostel are the friendly and helpful staff – most of whom seem to live there as well. They were very helpful in organizing a trip to the Great Wall and to see a Chinese acrobats show for us, and they booked our train out of Beijing as well. The activities were both amazing and well-priced.

On the day we arrived, the family who runs the hotel invited guests to share in a feast with them in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, for a small fee. This was very nice of them and a great event.

The food they served was good, but we stuck mostly to the noodles and didn’t really try the “Western breakfasts.”

They also have a very adorable orange cat at the hostel.

I have to mention that the hostel does have a slight cockroach problem as I saw a few scurrying around in my dorm room and in the main area. I’m still going to provide a four out of five because everything else was spectacular and perhaps this is a common issue across Beijing hostels… I suggest if you come here to keep a lid on your food!

We spent 7 nights in september 2011 at the Red Latern House (west yard). Nice clean rooms in a charming hutong. Easy access to the subway close by and well situated in the town. Restaurant and breakfast were good. Staff helped us a lot but it depends a lot on who you talk to because some of them have better english and a more resourceful than others. Good value for the price and we recommand it without hesitation.

Room Tip: The west yard is smaller and has no dorms. Perfect for a couple like us who is not used to the hoste...

I'm writing these reviews a bit late but we had a lovely week at this pretty hostel in Beijing in March 2011. We stayed at one of the annexes. The bed was a little bit short for my 6'2" husband (perfect for me, though!) but comfy and the room had lots of nice touches. The shower was good, and we always had hot water. The communal area in this annex is not as big or as attractive as that in the main hostel, but it was still a pleasant place to relax in the evening. The staff helpfully organised a trip to the Great Wall at Mutianyu for us (the hostel's driver took us, with another couple), which was great. The hostel is some distance from the main tourist areas, but it's on a hutong which gives you a bit of a different 'taste' of Beijing, and it is incredibly easy to get around using the metro. Last but not least, if you stay for a decent length of time, a free breakfast is included and as they serve til 11 a.m., if you're travelling on a budget, you can skip lunch!

Booked RLH for 7 days. A big priority was internet access due to needing connectivity for work. Since this place advertised "Internet and Wi fi in lobby and room" we booked here. What they didn't tell us was that there was only Wifi & internet available in the lobby areas! We actually didn't find out until we had checked in and were taken to our room, which was about a 5-10 min walk from the main lobby through a hutong where people are constantly hacking and spitting on the ground (I know, I know, this is China). The lady told us there was no internet except in the lobby in a "take it or leave it" fashion and left us deal with it. Well, after thinking about it for a few minutes, we decided to check out and go looking for a new place with internet access in the room as we had planned. When we went to check out to find another place, we were asked why. We replied "Because the internet isn't in the room." She replied in an annoyingly angry "I told you it wasn't in the room." Yeah, we got that, thats why we decided to check out. Because it wasn't as promised in their description. Don't bother to book here if you need internet access in your room. You will be required to sit in a sweaty lobby for a poor wifi signal.

If internet isn't a big deal, then maybe it isn't so bad. It isn't a far walk from a metro station and some cute little restaurants. If you think you will be staying in the cute building with red lanterns adorning the place, though, think again. You will only stay there if you are staying in a dormitory. If you want a private room with bathroom, you will stay in a spartan little room with stained "white" towels off of a concrete courtyard open to air away from the reason you probably looked into this place at all. Your choice., though.

We have spent 3 ights in the annex of the hostel. We had reserved a double room with bathroom. The room was small but clean. The staff at the reception was very helpful and provided us with all the informations we needed.
Not far from the metro, in a typical Beijing hutong.
We have gone to the Great Wall joining a trip of the hostel and we have been quite satisfied, even though we would have rather had skipped the lunch in a tourist restaurant order to spend some more time on the great wall.
