Me and 3 of my friends had a wonderful afternoon hiking on the Great Wall. Our driver/ tour guide Liu was so nice and made us feel great all along.
Thank you

We explored this part of the great wall on a hot July weekend. We decided to hire a private guide for this trip. Found our guide’s contact here on trip advisor. Peter Zhao (iampeter518@foxmail.com) is one of the funniest, yet most reliable persons we know. After contacting him from at home, he kept contact, advised about clothing etc via email and facebook.

He picked us up at 07.00 am from our hotel and we drove for appx 2 hours. He even prepared music he thought we might like (and we liked!).

The wall at Huanhuacheng is officially closed and you enter through a hole which you have to climb through (funny and challenging, but possible). You never find this on your own! On the wall, you are alone! Completely alone! And you walk on it and simply do nothing else than admiring this world wonder. Peters told us about the history and why it has been built.

Finally, being hungry, he took us to a restaurant where they serve fresh fish (trouts) directly from the crystal water ponds next to it. Amazing local cuisine at good prices. Back we drove two hours again, with relaxing and humorous discussions and a nap. As agreed and very punctual, we arrived at our hotel. This was a memorable day and a wonderful, unexpected experience.

We arrived at the wall early morning and had the section all to ourselves for two hours, during which time we enjoyed a fun but challenging hike along the wall. Parts of it is fairly steep so certainly worked up a bit of a sweat but the views were absolutely spectacular - highlight of our trip!

After visits to BadaLing, and MuTianYu, as well as the far off the beaten path JinShanLing, we decided to trek to the more remote Huang Hua Cheng section. Travel to this area, luckily is only about 1.5 hours by car (lucky enough to avoid the Beijing rush hour). The western section is mostly un-restored providing a window into the original Ming Dynasty construction. The views from the top, overlooking the reservoir, Shihuyucun, and the Eastern Wall Section are breathtaking.

Michael was a perfect host, highlighting historical facts as well as information about modern life in Beijing. His English is excellent, and he is a great conversationalist!

Things to note:
It's a 5 hour tour if traffic is ok, and you are in good shape. (I am not, so getting up to the top took me a bit longer than normal)
It is a really steep section, with long flat inclines. Wear proper shoes and go slowly.
Summertime is sweltering hot, so bring lots of water.
If you have some extra time, enjoy a drink or some food at the cafe on the base when you are done.
Enjoy this trip, it is one of my favorites.

Our hike at the Great Wall at Huanghuacheng was a highlight of our trip to China. We went through Catherine Lu tours and would highly recommend this section of the wall for those who are capable of a relatively strenuous hike and looking to avoid the crowds.
