Take the subway to the Palace. Enter through the nearest Gate, and leave through the same gate. Lots of hills and stairs to climb.
I really enjoyed our time in the summer palace.
It's a big place, so you can wander off and spend an entire day there. I suggest reading about the suggested walking routes they have in the official website, so you could plan your visit better. I think it's probably best to visit early on in the trip as it may seem similar and slightly repetitive if you visited other places in China.
I visited here and spent an entire afternoon on a recent trip to Beijing. The vistas were lovely and the sites, including the fantastic marble boat, were amazing. Compared to some attractions in Beijing, it was not too terribly crowded on the day I visited. I also took one of the boat rides and that was very pleasant. I would definitely be sure to visit when you are in Beijing.
A pleasant place to visit and look around. You can take boats out on the water but be prepared with enough cash as most required a ¥400 deposit plus the hire charge. Went in October on a fairly chilly day but can imagine that in the summer it a great escape from the city.

Go there after 11am people you will regret too many people even on weekdays
So go there as early as possible !!
If old people are going might need to think about it. If not climbing the stairs is good for old people !! Climbing up the stairs is a bit challenging for old people !!
