Owner description: Once a summer retreat for emperors, this 290-acre park is still a retreat for the crowd-weary tourist, who can relax here or stroll around ancient pavilions, mansions, temples, bridges and huge lake, stopping occasionally at a shop or tea-house.

Yes, this place was crowded, but welcome to China! This site is so massive with so much to see that you can still really enjoy yourself and take plenty of great photos. We had a private guide who explained everything to us. The architecture was interesting, the lake was quite scenic, the gardens and trees were colourful and there were plenty of gift shops and places to buy food.

Comfy shoes and clothes and you are set to go. It’s vey big so be ready to get lost a bit (jk :D) it’s beautiful and you can take a boat ride in the lake.

I could have spent more time here, but it was not to be. We were there in early spring as the blossoms were starting to emerge, a couple of weeks later it would have been stunning. Go early to beat the crowds.

we had a local guide who led us on a half day tour through lush gardens, boat ride. You will find Chinese local retirees painting chines calligraphy onto the walk ways, see trees you heve never seen before, amazing journey into the rich past of Chinese culture

Tour guide Jimmy (Weijun An) is great. He is very knowledgeable of the history of the Imperial Palace. Personable, friendly and does his best to accommodate the wishes of his customers. I would recommend him to be anyone’s tour guide.
